    So you've been there too.
I lived there for nearly 4 years and my Nan and my Aunt still live there. :o

I used to go there 2-3 times a week as a baby barrister, to the Mags court. Didn't like it much (-:
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.
  • I've also had chopped up casserole veg at 20p for a generous bag in the Tesco reductions, which is cheaper than buying the veg whole in the first place.

Those are great (if reduced) for making soup etc. Not worth it at full price, though, as you say.

I buy those meals for work, IF and only IF they're reduced (eg yellow sticker) to £1 or less. I've also had chopped up casserole veg at 20p for a generous bag in the Tesco reductions, which is cheaper than buying the veg whole in the first place. But to pay full price; people who do that have more money than sense and deserve to be ripped off. It's not that hard to cut a carrot, is it? And if it is, surely you'd have a support worker or something? (NOT a dig at disabled people, please do not take offence)!

not taking offence but this is not true ( i used to work in sociakl servicesproviding care packages for older people)

Ready meals from M&S are a lot cheaper than meals on wheels ( and most people have to pay for these, contrary to popular belief) each hot meal regulary comes in at around the £4.00 mark per hot meal plus a pound or so for a pudding. The quality of these foods is diabolical. I remember one elderly lady bursting into tears on the phone to me, that the quality of this food she had was so much worse than she could do herself, (and it reminded her vividly how much of her own capacity was lost due to ageing.) however she had lost dexterity in her hards due to shakiness and could not use a knife/kettles/ hot water any more safely. I lost count of the amount of concerned sons & daughters who rang social services concerned about how much weight thier elderly parents had lost.

Many daughters & sons decided it was cheaper all round to buy M&S ready meals for thier parents, there is - in their- and my view a level of quality and luxury about M&S foods that most people like. I would much rather feed my elderly parents a M&S ready meal than a meals on wheels one.

2 years ago when I was working in social services there were 3 main services a client could buy in.

that was - shopping- someone comes to your house collects the moeny & shopping liast goes to where youd like them to go and buys your shopping brings it in the house for you ( sometimes) returning change- cost 16.80 per hour. NO split cost should the hour go over- so 1 hour 2 mins would be £33.60.

cleaning- 12.50 per hour, all cleaning undertaken ( to varying degrees of quality).

caring- various prices depending on need- basic care ( helping bathe) was 14ph IIRC.

If you wanted specific cooking help ( eg someone to come to your house to cook you a meal would be astronomical!! One bloke I knew paid 20 quid amorning for someone to make him a cooked breakfast ( family tradition, hed always had one ever day of his adult life) .but more often than not people requested this service, but no one ever took it! can you see why!!
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

The following article is dated 11/07/2007, and it says,

"The chief executive Stuart Rose received £3.6m in salary and bonuses last year, up 68 per cent on a year ago, after a resurgent 12 months for the firm, whose annual profits increased by 28.5 per cent."

  • LynzPower, I never said M&S ready meals are a bad idea; I cannot afford them unless they're on special offer (they often do certain ones for half price or buy one get one half price). And they, along with those sold by Waitrose, of a high quality and nutritional value. But some of the meals are too expensive. All I was saying is that if you can cook for yourself, which I can, then it's cheaper to tkae the extra time and make the effort to cook. It's laziness otherwise. I accept there are some people who have to rely on these meals; my grandmother was one of them; she had macular degeneration, cataracts and arthritis and was nearly blind as well as in pain. The fees charged for doing someone's shopping are too high; it would be cheaper to just order online or get someone to do it for them, eg the client's children or someone else trusted. Cheaperand time efficient and the client does not need intenet access themself.
