M&S cuts 1,000 jobs as fashion sales dive

I've just had this emailed through which I thought was quite funny.
Marks & Spencer are to merge with Poundstretcher. They will trade as Stretchmarks :rotfl:I am a Mortgage Consultant and don't like to be told what I can and can't put in a signature so long as it's legal and truthful.0 -
I wonder how much they shell out to Take That and those 'famous' women to do their adverts?!? Bit of moneysaving needed there methinks. I am hardly going to shop somewhere because Twiggy is in the advert.
I like M&S food and some of their other items. Their website leaves a lot to be desired but overall they are fairly decent, especially compared to Debenhams which has constant megadays and looks like a jumble sale.
The charging for a shopping bag only happens in foods and it is 5p for a basic carrier bag. The 10p ones are 'bags for life' which M&S will replace if they burst. I have only been caught out once without a bag, and it won't be happening again!
I think they are being sensible making decisions and being realistic about their business in 2009.Not buying unnecessary toiletries 2024 26/53 UU, 25 IN0 -
Best of luck, it must be a frightening time. The pension changes look a bit alarming too.
My hubby's stores he works at are safe, for now, thanks. :-)
But I don't agree with people that have said M&S is for 40+ or for people who are not young/have children etc..
I am early 30's, have 3 children under the age of 5 and quite often in there with a buggy!
I have shopped at the Food Hall for years, and buy other basics/groceries at Sainsbury's/Tescos'.
I also buy the children's clothes, & a few bits of undies.
I personally don't like the clothing for adults (of my age) but my father used to love his M&S jumpers & trousers.
That is where I think they are getting it wrong, until more recently, their clothes were all aimed at a certain age range.0 -
They may have made £1 billion profit, but they are still £3 billion in debt
"M&S, which last year made workers’ redundancy packages less generous, has cut investment recently to reduce its £3 billion debt. "
The debts will probably be pension based, £1bn profit is not to be sniffed at and is hardly indicitive of a failing company thats about to shut its doors.0 -
I love M&S food and will buy it when the purse allows...I was one of those who took up their party offer last week (3 trays of party food plus a bottle of Cava for a tenner) and it was way way better than the Iceland party food I had purchased the week before.
I have purchased some clothing items from them (I sit here wearing M&S jeans, £5 in the sale) but not very often. We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -

And to Dervela Kirwin. I too have a neutral Irish accent and can speak in a languid, sexy voice while eulogising about food. I offer my services for 1/3 of what she's paid. But only if I can eat the food when they finish filming.:D0 -

The M & S boss has said he won't be taking a pay rise:
Marks and Spencer chief executive Sir Stuart Rose has said he does not intend to take a pay rise this year.
And he also believes it unlikely that he will be receiving a bonus.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7816414.stm...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
