Sounds daft but you're definitely lining the two infrared ports up arent you. I only ask because Nokia tend to hide them away these days.0

The one on the phone is at the top and I'm pointing that at the pc tower where the red light flashes. Is that right?

Where the red light flashes? Infrared is beyond human visual range so my guess is if you can see it, it's almost certainly not it. What sort of PC is this? Is it a branded model or a custom build?0

Mine tends to be a bit critical, the range is only about 6 inches and it needs to be pointed directly the sensor on the lappy (not like the a telly remote in the general direction of the screen).0
