This happened to my OH also whilst in the middle of Wales in the midst of nowhere with my 7 year old daughter in the car. The Tom Tom just went off tried the reset button and everything still wouldn't come on. Hubby was stranded for 7 hours until the morning when he had to go to the nearest Argos and buy another sat nav and no he didn't buy a Tom Tom but a Garmin which he says is much better than the Tom Tom. I emailed the customer services link on the Tom Tom site (this was back in September as i cannot find a phone number for them) I have still not received a response obviously they do not believe in customer service, they've had my £200 now. I was thinking about going to Watch Dog as looking on the Internet this seems to be a very common problem and is obviously a fault somewhere with the Tom Tom. Its not as if the item costs £10, £200 is a lot of money to spend on something that doesn't last 6 months.

Nah - never worked out what that one did!
It is the spring that holds the unit onto the car mount :rotfl:

Just a quick update. After pressing reset for the 2nd time, I managed to power on. Went on to Tom Tom home - updated devices and also backed it up. After completed this, got quite excited as thought I'd managed to solve the problem. However, when touching the screen to navigate through menus, nothing happened, it wouldn't budge. Decided to switch off and then on again. Big mistake, I'm back to square one now. Won't switch on or respond at all again. Just sitting looking good in it's charging cradle with no sign of life. I've completely lost faith in it now, it has to go back. Will try Dixons first then Tom Tom themselves if no joy.
Thanks for all your help anyway.
If you haven't gone to see if you can swap it, has it got a green or amber light on while in the cradle? Have you tried turning it on while it's in the cradle?

How does a TomTom breaking down strand someone for 7 hours? Many people in Wales speak english!

Yes it has a green light while it's on in the cradle. It won't switch on in the cradle or out. I'm going to have a good look through tom tom home website to see if there is any product support available now  . Didn't expect so much hassle for a device costing £200+

According to saynotoyo0870 then 0800 0682868 should be a freephone number for Dixons. You still have a rights under the Sale Of Good Act and your contract is with Dixon not Tom Tom so feel free to reject it as not been of satifactory quality and either get a replacement or your money back

  • OK back again after visiting Tom tom product support website and following instructions for 920 model. After removing SD card and holding reset button for 15 seconds, it would appear that it's back up and running for now at least. Still very very suspicious regarding it's reliability though. Will keep you posted if I encounter any more problems. Thanks everyone

I have a different make which very occasionally freezes up or goes odd, and switch off then restarts without and then with the SD chip sorts it out.

Well, he was in the middle of nowhere and it was night time pitch black. If he had known where to go im sure he would have with the seven year old being stuck in the car also with him. Any way if you were not in that situation yourself then you cannot comprehend the situation at the time that it happened. Plus his venue was in the middle of nowhere, if anyone who attended the indefatigable school would be well aware of the isolated location.
