Seek advice from CAB about benefits you might be able to get too.0

Hi
I agree that you need to sort the immediate issues.
You say that 1000 cards produced 20 jobs.
10,000 should produce 200 jobs which should be about 6 months solid work.
Dont worry about customers having no money, if their boiler is playing up or their tank is leaking they will find it.
As a matter of interest it is quite possible to post 1000 leaflets a day, just steer clear of the council places.
Also it gives you someting to do rather than sitting at home waiting for the work to come in and getting fed up.
Good luck0 -
You should ring your local trading standards or look up online and see if they have a "trade safe" list of plumbers etc. And see what he has to do to get on the list. I know our council has one and it's a good source of work for some.0

Have you looked at Debt free wannabe board? You might get some ideas about cutting your living costs, if you like where you are renting and want to stay a bit of effort now in making some extra money might just be enough.0

My son is also in the building trade and not getting any work. He has flooded our city with leaflets week after week with very few jobs materialising. He can no longer afford to get the leaflets, cards etc printed and was doing them at home on the pc but, to honest there are so many people chasing so little work its very disheartening. In the end he has had to cut his prices so much it would now cost him money to do the work and with two kids and a mortgage he cannot afford to do that. His wife works part time and now gets tax credits could you maybe think of taking that route until things pick up again?0

I already work pt and get tax redits ect.
Will look into HB, OH has got his tax year to do by end of month, so doubt
it will get sorted till then so we can give them a figure.
As for Debt free wannabe, um its a can of worms,
both have got debt from previous years, and previous partners.
And im not even going to get into that.
BUT household bills are coming first, we dont smoke, drink, go out,
ive got one pair of jeans to my name,
weve been struggling for ages, I guess its just end of the road!!
Tho we are having a sort out to sell on ebay,
I am a positive person, but also realistic....
work is not going to get better, money is not going to get better,
neither is this country.
BUT sales of portable gas heaters are on the up0 -
You're working so will be entitled to child and working tax credits, probably housing benefit and council tax benefit as well as your salary alone is not enough to live on.
Go to www.entitledto.co.uk and see what the figures are. Don't forget to select the box to say that 2008/2009 income will be lower than the previous tax year.
Unless your rent is much greater than the LHA for the area you're living I don't see why you should need to be made homeless.
Also you could talk to your local citizens advice if you need help/support to make the claims.
The safety net is designed for hard working people like yourselves who are having a small run of bad luck. Hopefully when you've sorted out the immediate crisis your OH will be able to start to rebuild his business.0 -
Hi, I just wanted to say that we are in the same position as you where we don't know if we could pay the rent at the of every month - Our landlord was very understanding and wanted to help us out as much as he could! Although he couldn't drop the rent, he did allow us to have a few weeks longer to pay it and he also allowed weekly deposits (as I'm paid weekly). It did make things alot easier to deal with.
As for the Debt Free Wannabe thread, I am a regular there and since joining, I have found that I can cut back on a lot of things that I thought at the time were necessary for every day living... give us a chance and pop by...! First lets get your rent and other priority debts like council tax etc sorted and then you could perhaps try tackle your other non-priority debts... it's one tiny baby step at a time... Also try the Moneysaving Oldstyle Board for some ideas on cutting down groceries.
Good Luck!0 -
Havent read all the previous replies but is there a possibility you and/or your husband could get a 2nd job, maybe cleaning, babysitting or at supermarket in the evenings, just temporary to enable to to pay the rent?
Start looking for a cheaper place to rent now, so at the end of this month you can give landlord the 1 month notice (or w/e is required)Squish0 -
It costs about £100 to get say 10,000 leaflets printed up.
Why not come up with a special along the line of boiler replacement for 1500.
All the days he is not working can be spent dropping the flyers thru letterboxes. Could work out very well. Think positive and try to make things happen. You have nothing to lose.
B Gas charge about £3000 and the cost of the boiler is about £1000.
He could make a good living.
I agree, most of the people I have hired to do work in my house are from having leaflets dropped through my door.0
