Biblejohn, that is why you need an additional income stream. Cutting back will never be enough.

Many employers frown on "moonlighting". Some jobs, esp at management level, expect you to do unpaid overtime and yr boss will be upset if you're not available to do so. Sorry, can't work over the weekend to get the accounts ready for Monday's audit, am doing Feng Sheui!

However, if (a) this isn't the case and (b) you have a marketable skill and (c) you have spare time - why not?

Exactly. Unfortunately im out from 6am until 7pm working, so I havent really got the spare time to take up a 2nd job. The only way I can see of paying my mortgage off a bit quicker is to have the missus move in with me and pay me something towards it. But, that will incure additional expenses like loosing my single persons discount on the council tax, having to eat more expensive food, and having my heating bill go through the roof as (like a lot of women) she is always cold.

I worked out the other day, if i got my normal hourly rate for all the extra overtime i do, id actually take home 50% more money than i do now!

The same problem I have, if I took in a lodger then bills will increase - my employer expects me to work all the hours god send at the moment, but have told them to stick it where the sun doesn't since as I have work elsewhere and I get paid for it.

Another option is to find a better job/career to go into with more money?

Its a catch22 isnt it really. Ive spent 10 years in my current career in "high paid" IT industry trying to work up the ladder and yet im earning less now than i was 6 years ago doing the same IT job in a different company. I did consider having a career change. Maybe becoming a solicitor or lawyer - but that would involve many years of study and having to work as a "trainee" for a few years on a much lower wage - so it would be 6 years at least before I could start earning big bucks. Failing that, ive considered property development as im very good at house/garden DIY - ive completely done everything in my current house myself - new garden, new kitchen, new bathroom, plumbing, wiring, plastering, decorating etc... But that option is out the window as every less-experienced man & his dog are on that band wagon.

So, not much else out there for me really.

The best career for moonlighting has to be the Fire Service. A neighbour of mine, runs his own building firm & Plumbing business and still get times to be a fireman or should that be the other way round.

Went past the fire station the other day and the car park was full of new BMWs, Audis and Builders Van. Yet firemen always moan they are underpaid, lol

Id second that. I know 2 current firemen and 4 ex firemen of various ages and they all agree with exactly what you say. The current firemen I know actually work nights, then have a day job too, mainly because the night shift is fairly quiet so they can get a good bit of kip down the station whilst waiting for jobs. They take great delight in telling me of the various "tricks" they use to get more money such as taking the engine out when its not really needed as they get more each time it leaves the station etc... They also delibrately make a detour through the city centre on a thurs/fri/sat night to show off and pull women. etc.. etc...

Of course, that might just be the 6 or so firemen I know and the stations they have all worked at locally and not representive of all firemen.

The fireman I know has just bought a £3K watch on his holiday to the Barbados. I think the governement needs to clamp down on there moonlighting.

Funny how this is seen as moonlighting, yet there are numerous threads on here about a generating a second income.

    Double standards me thinks.

As long as the guys are physically capable of doing both then good luck to them, I for one would not do their job for an income the size of the UK's consumer debt.

    PS I'm not a fireman.

I may be wrong, but I didn't think firemen were allowed to do extra jobs, they have to be alert for their main job (at least that is the idea).
