My repayment mortgage is £700pm, if I were to rent here it would be £800pm, I see my house as my home not an investment but in less than 20 years I won't have to pay anything as it will be mine regardless of value. If I were renting I would be paying £800 for ever with nothing to show for it. I know renting is big on the continent but I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it. I wonder if anyone has owned and now rents and feels this is better, as most will have rented but now own of course.
  • This is a bit of a silly thread really.

Some people like to rent because it gives them more freedom, some prefer to buy because they don't want to keep moving every 6 months potentially and not everyone can/wants to live in a council house.

When I was young and single renting suited me fine (just as well really as I couldn't afford to buy then anyway) and I didn't mind moving frequently as I didn't have much to move.

Now I'm married with 2 children I wouldn't fancy the insecurity of renting. I don't want to keep moving all the time it's really stressful especially with young children and the amount of "stuff" that we've accumulated over the years means we couldn't feasibly move ourselves so it would cost a lot every 6 months - a year.

From a purely personal point of view it doesn't matter to me if (when!) the price of our house drops over the next few years as we're not planning to move until the children leave home. Which given that they are 1 and 2 respectively won't be for a while. I'm not going to lose sleep over worrying about where the economy is going to be in 20 years time, I'm just going to get on with paying the mortgage and saving for a downpour.

But you know, horses for courses and all that. Some people don't like the idea of being tied down to a mortgage/same house for years and that's fair enough.
  • Just as an aside - I can't see the UK switching from a nation of homeowners to renters unless tenants could have security of tenure as they did in the 1970s and early 80s and I don't see that happening again to be honest.

I dont think everyone goes about posting pictures of there parents home do they, whilst giving away enough infomation to actually find the house.

People are easy to find....Robert Peston, 125 Dukes Ave, N10 2QD.

    Just for instance.....

Im sure a grade I listed residential building in kent aint gonna be hard to find.
I'll publish the address in this forum later next week :-)

Then I will out NDG :)

Post reported to 'abuse'. I have also requested that they make this username PPR (Posting Priviledge Removed) to send a message to other posters that this sort of threatening behaviour is not tolerated on MSE.

I sincerely hope that they follow my recommendations.
    Mortgage Free in 3 Years (Apr 2007 / Currently / Δ Difference)
    [strike]● Interest Only Pt: £36,924.12 / £ - - - - 1.00 / Δ £36,923.12[/strike] - Paid off! Yay!! :)
    ● Home Extension: £48,468.07 / £44,435.42 / Δ £4032.65
    ● Repayment Part: £64,331.11 / £59,877.15 / Δ £4453.96
    Total Mortgage Debt: £149,723.30 / £104,313.57 / Δ £45,409.73
  • Appreciate this is probably a joke thread but I'm obliged to mention it's only dead money if you're actually paying off your mortgage with the equivalent in rent rather than just the interest. I know this is a shocking concept these days.

Do you realise how much of a snob you sound? Looking down on anyone who cant afford to buy

to be fair that is done all the time by many forum posters critical of home owners with regards to the recent house price drops.

either way it's not the best thing to do.
