bt broadband - my father died and they still want outstanding money to cancel it!!!

When it is a death it is hardly a sob story. Can you let me know who you work for and I'll make sure I never buy anything from them?
I asked first - name your company ! If it exists.
I am retired now, but by all means make sure that you never travel in a Merc or fly in an Airbus !0 -

Anyways, i will take it all on board and i have decided to complain as looking at the timescale of when my father must have entered into the contract he was most certainly not in a position to realise what he was doing as he was in the latter stages of his terminal illness. He entered into this contract after getting a call to do so by some call centre from BT. He had this same broadband connection for my son who has also posted here for a number of years. Obviously my father did not know much about technology etc so in light of all this I still feel quite strongly and I am goin to pursue the complaint, not just for the money as I would pay it myself but more of the principle factor. Again thank you for your responses.0 -

Sonyamac, firstly I'm sorry for your loss. I'm also sorry that some MSE users forget that we are here to help each other. I would phone BT and ask for the phone number for the Chairmans Office - it's really BT high level complaints. I think if you explain the position to them I am sure they will do the right thing.0

I DID NOT say that the OP's original post was a "sob story" - so perhaps you would like to apologise for your grossly insulting comment !
What I did allude to was the, all too common ruse, of saying that the delay, failure to do something, inability to turn up for work or whatever is often put down a sudden death in the family. It is not unknown for the same relative to "die" on numerous occasions, usually on the day of a big sporting event or following a big celebration.
My original response to the OP was totally correct and has been supported by other "independent" posts. This was then followed by a post referring to some company, which the poster has refused to name, which apparently will cancel debts against a deceased's estate - as a matter of course.
NO commercial organisation would do this, it is a recipe for commercial suicide. In this case BT would require the remainder of the contract to be paid because they have contracts in place with other companies that provide them with goods and services.
It would also be somewhat more honest if you and others who seem not be able to read and understand were to make clear their relationship to the OP, instead of just arguing the toss and making insulting comments to those who were making helpful responses to the OP.
PS: I AM STILL WAITING FOR THE NAME OF THIS COMPANY

Hold on a moment, maybe you should reread Peter999's post? He said that his company will declare contracts null for deceased buyers. You said that this must mean they'll take any sob story.. What relevance does that have to anything Peter said? Intentional or not you heavily implied that our situation could be taken as a sob story. Why? Why did you allude to that? Several companies we have dealt with have been fine and have not asked to be paid for services they won't be able to provide. Despite me being able to read and understand absolutely fine, I'll answer that anyway. I have already made clear my relation to the OP, so I fail to understand your problem? I wouldn't consider belittling a mourning woman helpful, maybe you do? Yes you provided advice in saying that BT are right to charge, you have been thanked for the advice and it is appreciated but implying whether purposeful or not that this is a sob story to get out of a contract is very well not appreciated.0 -
I am currently in a complaint with bt . Granted not in the same leauge as this but I found using offcom focucsed their mind somwhat0

Just posting to update you on our situation. I complained to BT through their online service. I have just had a phone call. The gentleman on the phone apologised profusely for the response we got initially and that of course due to the circumstances they would definately not be charging my mother for the outstanding broadband contract. He couldnt have been nicer and the BT line will be switched over onto my mothers name.
So thanks to the poster for the advice to complain. One less thing to worry about. Thanks again for your comments.0 -
