  • I use a couple of salmon pieces to make a salmon pasta - white sauce based, poach your salmon portions and when cooked flake them and add to cooked pasta and white sauce. Add in chopped onion, peppers, mushrooms and whatever other bits and bobs you fancy (you can substitute the white sauce for cream if and when you are feeling extravangent!) Add a bit of lemon juice, soy sauce and mixed herbs to perk it up a bit. Will feed you for 2 days (we have 5 to feed and it does us 2 days.)

When you do a spag bol, bulk it out with orange dried lentils (I usually chuck in 6 tablespoons or thereabouts.)

Or a fish pie with the salmon, poach or cook the salmon in the microwave, put on oven proof dish, add cheese sauce, then peas or sweetcorn or mushrooms, top with mash and some more grated cheese and bung in oven. Agree with everyone that adds oats and lentils to mince to make it go further. I can normally make a roast chicken last for 3-4 meals, making chicken pie, chicken noodle soup (use carcass for stock), chicken curries etc. Good luck. ;)

hi yorkshirechick this is my dads hot cake recipe. Basically get fresh yeast free from Asda and a big bag of their smartprice plain flour. Empty the flour into a big bowl, leaving a bit in the bag for kneading on the worktop. to the flour add the yeast(2oz), then 1 palmful of salt and 1 1/2 palmful of sugar. Then add warm water and mix it all in. When you have a dough give it a good kneading then leave in a bowl for 1 hour. I then cut this into 20 bits and knead each bit into a round. I then put four at a time onto a floured baking tray at top of oven (gas 7) for about 5 mins then transfer these onto next shelf down (directly on shelf). Repeat til they are all sounding hollow on their bottoms. My hubby and sons love these straight from the oven with butter on. I generally put sausages and bacon in them. They are very filling and the cakes are very big so you can make quite a lot from this one batch and freeze them. Enjoy!

Great ideas from OP'S - especailly about bulking the party out with crisps and jelly- hee hee I forgot about jelly, & its real cheap.
Iceland have their party food reduced to 50p at the moment, details here -including susage rolls & mini pizzas- depends if there is one near you but might be good for others.
I stocked up on the samasosa etc one year from asda's party food as they keep for a while as there frozen.A lot of places sell thei party food off at the moment - I just use them for normal meals when Im poor.
Otherwise somerfield have goodfelleas pizzas at £1 or as other op said mini pizzas are great idea to make.
Much easier than a big pizza which I struggle with plus you dont need to put much toppings on.

I've been looking for bags of lentils, but can't seem to find them, any ideas anyone?? Tescos were the cheapest last time I bought some, but health stores should have these too. Most supermarkets stock them :)
The lentils in the Asian foods section (Natco brand) are cheaper than the ones in the wholefoods section (tesco own brand).

    Cake recipe

Needs to be made the same day as it does not keep.

For two 8" cake tines, sandwich together with butter icing or jam.

Equal weights of eggs, sugar, self raising flour and butter/marg or combination of the two.

You need around 200g or each, but start by weighing four eggs and then weigh out the rest. You could get away with one egg less and a bit of milk to loosen the mixture.

Stick in a bowl and whizz until light and creamy. it will be stiff enough to hold the peak if you lift out the spoon but soft. Divide between two cake tins and make the centre a little bit lower than the edges (as it will rise more).

You can replace part of the flour with a cocoa or drinking chocolate if you want.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing

Not sure where any of you live ...but I live in a rural area and can get a 12.5 kg sack of potatoes for 2.50 at my local farm. We just drive there and put the money in the honesty box - this is in our small town not miles out in the country! Worth trying as a sack of spuds goes a long way ! Both my DD come home to buy potatoes!

I've heard that if you go to the bakery section and ask one of the bakers, they'll give you some fresh yeast free.
