"At the end of the PC tools firewall it runs a scan and has found 11 threats and 238 infections through spyware doctor"

Youve done NOTHING wrong as such. Maybe just a slight misshap :p
Go back to the PCTOOLS link and make sure you clicked 'DOWNLOAD NOW' underneath where it says "PC Tools Firewall Plus Free Edition 4"

Im under the impresion you maybe clicked the wrong link and downloaded SPYWARE DOCTOR by accident (So make sure you go back to all 2 links other than the norton one and that you did in fact click the 'DOWNLOAD NOW' button underneath the title)

    Download MALWAREBYTES (Link above)
    UPDATE and FULL scan
Post the log here AFTER it deletes anything it finds

    Then restart the computer
    Download HIJACK THIS
    http://www.download.com/Trend-Micro-HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html
SCAN and post the log so we can see whats going on :)

    ps ~ dont panic :p

...hhmmm....if it SD ver 4, this is well out of date....the "correct" version can be downloaded from here:-
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/Spyware_Doctor_-_Starter_Edition_d5790.html

If you do this it will uninstall any earlier versions as part of it's installation process...install, update and scan..one of the updates will be to ver.6....
I like this as it gives some real-time protection on the spyware front and is pretty user-friendly...

Also, as RIK says, do the MAlwarebytes and HiJackThis and post the logs...

You can choose what you want to download, just tick the relevant boxes.

    Hopefully the link works.

You know, I here a lot of people go on about this 'evil' realplayer. But in all honesty its a pretty good media player and I personally dont mind if they take note of what I listen to or look at. Who cares! Plus you can switch off its 'ad' part anyways

  • Like the OP my security is due to expire in the next few days. I currently have Norton 360 (purchased with my laptop) As renewal is £60ish I've been looking at cheaper alternatives ie Kaspersky/Macafee (not sure I've spelt that right!) My questions (as I'm useless with the technical side of things) are:-
    1) Would you recommend these?
    2) Should I go for "Anti Virus" or "Internet Security" or do I need both?
    3) Do I need to uninstall Norton before I put whichever new one I get on?

    Any advice please?

    Do NOT buy mcafee.
Kasperskys a good security suite though

Well you do need more than just an anti virus to my mind. But there are plenty of free programs that will cover your needs.

Yes you need to uninstall norton before installing the new. Use the uninstall tool ~
