keep thinking about a wipe clean and re-install, which is we cannot fix any other way I will have to do anyway.
If you do choose to do this I'd recommend backing up all data to DVD / CD / External HDD first then do something like the following:
1. Insert recovery disks and completely wipe your computer
2. Uninstall any pre-loaded programs and windows components you don't need
3. Update manufacturer’s drivers
4. Run a windows update
5. Install firefox + adblock and any other applications add-ons
6. Install anti-virus and any other applications
7. Run another windows update
8. Restore your data0 -
I do automatically download and install any windows updates, so I know they are up to date, it is the laptop I have having fun with SP1, the desktop loaded it OK, though it was duff before so cannot blame that.
I did download CCleaner and ran it and it found nothing only a few weeks ago.
Need to make some space on the HD before a defrag would be any benefit, which I am in the process of doing anyway.
As an update Malwarebytes is still running (56 mins) but a 450gb hdd, and still clean.
Thanks

If avg is automatically scanning everyday and the drive large and quite full then that willl be using the hdd for hours. turn off automatic scanning.Nudge nudge, Wink wink, Say No More!0

Whats the Spec?
Also you don't need daily scanning.
Personally I would use Avira as it is much lighter on resources.0 -
OK Malwarebytes still running clean 2hr 07
Spec
Medion MD8828 - Intel Core2Due E6750 @ 2.77Ghz - 2gb memory
Although I have used AVG for years, I have listened and in the process of uninstalling it, and will download Avira

AVG does slow down computers to a degree. But nothing like you mention.
Especially with such a fast dual core computer.
Im still leaning towards those running processes I pointed out before.:idea:0 -
Also have a read of this. It will stop the annoying Vista Disk thrashing.

Well guys I am now even more bemused.

I have read and run and switched off everything above, stopped windows defender, removed AVG, I have nothing running that is obvious and it is coming up with 70% cpu usage and 53% physical memory, the majority of memory and all the cpu is for explorer.exe, and yes it is stll "thrashing"!
Next stage is to find my disks and check I can reinstall the Home Cinema and then delete that.
Just one question, how come my Dell Vista Business Laptop is not "thrashing"?
