PC Slow or even worse

Hi Guys

I have a Aldi Medion PC, which is about a year old, and while it is a very good spec machine, it is running like the proverbial tortoise. It has Vista Home Premium. What is worse is the hd seems to be running all the time, which cannot be good (yes I am backed up). I run and update daily AVG free, and also have Windows Defender, and run Ad-Aware now and again, but they are finding nothing. Currently operating my mail on my laptop, so as this is my most used site, don't expect to find much I shouldn't, but one never knows especially when DS has been home.

How can I check what is running the HD all the time? I have downloaded hijackthis if this is what I need.

If you right click the tast bar, select Task Manager, then on the Processes tab, click the CPU column, what's using the most? Also order by Mem Usage and what's using the most of this?

I've found AVG itself can really slow down the log on time so uninstalled and installed Avira AntiVir. But each PC is different.

I had done this, and it gave me no clues, tskmgr.exe the biggest cpu, andm ieplor and dwm on the memory.

Aside from that, it looks clean.
So it must be down to the programs and services that are running
Id say this isnt helping ~

Can you disable or uninstall the MAXTOR program?

If its not that then im guessing it must be something to do with these ~

Can you disable anything to do with the HOME CINEMA folders?
Its 'supposed' to speed up your computer. But Id hazard a guess its doing the exact opposite.

I'd follow these steps:

1. Go to Control Panel, then Programs and Features and uninstall anything not needed.
2. Run a Windows Update
3. Run CCleaner
4. Defragment your hard drive
5. If it's still slow then investigate msconfig http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/

I have to admit I am having problems with the TV viewing and the media player part of windows, it is not recognising the monitor and will not play in full screen mode, I think I have switched the vista media player off now, and keep thinking about a wipe clean and re-install, which is we cannot fix any other way I will have to do anyway.

Home Cinema gives me Medi@Show, Power Director, POwerDVD and Power Producer, These have to be removed individually from the control panel not as Home Cinema. Will just look at my original disks.

It's still running (well I did say it was slow) but so far as clean as a whistle.

Hijackthis is not removing the file but I think maybe as Malwarebytes is still running, so will retry after it finished.
