thanks for that link csnann, I did have it bookmarked but couldn't find it. you can read the forum rule on offering items for sale or swapping by following the link in the official post below :)
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: For legal reasons I have to discourage swapping, buying and selling on the forum (please see this rule). While it can be a very useful way of saving money it relies on a certain amount of trust between members and as such can cause problems (and has in the past). If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

Hi

Can anyone recommend a seed swapping group? Also, how exactly do they work?

I am looking to buy my seeds at the moment, and while I want some decent seeds, places like Suttons and T&M are quite expensive. I know that they generally produce good results for the money you pay, but I thought I would look at other options too.

Thanks :)

If you have any allotments near you could you pop along and have a chat with folks there... they'll seed/plant swap between themselves I'm sure.

I've just ordered some seeds from here, I haven't used them before, I just got the link from a thread on MSE, but they are very cheap, and only 90p P&P for seeds (per order, not per pack).
TOP MONEYSAVING TIP

Make your own Pot Noodles using a flower pot, sawdust and some old shoe laces. Pour in boiling water, stir then allow to stand for two minutes before taking one mouthful, and throwing away. Just like the real thing!

I joined a group on yahoo- something like UK seedshare - and i was very dissappointed tbh. None of the seeds I received turned out to be the right thing , eg butternut squash grew courgettes! and the person i swapped with was a bit snotty with it!

I've joined my local horticultural society and I'm the youngest person there by about 20 years- and they send off a group order from T&M and Suttons and get it for half price, so worth looking our for a group or set up our own group to get this offer
Just call me Nodwah the thread killer

Loads of help, and loads of seeds are swapped through the members.

I'd suggest buying some, splitting them down and swapping for other things that you want to grow.

They work by posting what you have and what you want to swap for, then people will send you a message and you can swap addresses in private. Then post on the original thread when they have been received.

The place to look at is ...........Allotments4all

They have an active seed swapping group. No money must change hands. Very often people don't want any seeds for themselves, they just have some they no longer require. Also, you can ask for a pinch of seeds you particularly fancy as I did last year i.e. I wanted to try Bidens again. A lady who does a lot of hanging baskets for the school or something similar sent me some and would not let me pay the postage but asked me to put the cost in a charity box which is what I did. If you have a look now you will see there a few Pass the Parcels going on. I swopped chilli seeds last year but some of the ones I got back didn't germinate. Just a chance you take.

This forum: http://nonnymouse.forumotion.net/forum.htm was set up by some MSE'rs and we seed-swap there, otherwise I agree, pay a visit to your local allotment site and speak to a few people there! Seed swapping is great, but how it works is pretty much up to who is doing the swap. Personally I am happy to give seeds away to new people as long as they try to save some seed from their crop to share with others next year. If it is an existing gardener, I prefer to swap. Some of the more 'professional' groups (such as garden organic) request specific cultivars or will only accept specific seeds for a swap. Personally, I'm pretty easy about what I swap for.
