We also have a little shop like this in the next village, sells a bit of everything, you just write down what you've bought and pop the money in the tin.....
  • Even if a bit of stuff was nicked (assuming a minor proportion), it would be counter-balanced by the saving in wages...

    Staff get paid for holidays.

I live in London and I am sorry to have to say this would not work here. I feel sad at that fact:

They used to have Honesty Boxes in most of the WH Smiths around me. Not anymore. I am guessing the rate of shoplifting/bad stocktakes gave them reason to withdraw the boxes.

Am glad though that there is somewhere in the UK where there are more honest people then non honest people Though my gut tells me I very much doubt the guy did a full stock take both before and after- he said he wanted to be with his family, a stock take in full can take up to a day itself in an average sized London store with over 40 staff chipping in with hand help computers linked to big computer systems to speed up the process.
  • use to do that for papers in ireland as people would run in grab a paper and what not before work seemed to work

I would like to see Superdrugs try this model after their blatant publicity stunt recently!

Try this in London and the shop will be emptied in no time with little money in. People will put a bit in like they are paying :)

A small store I worked in was open 24 hours but was so badly run that often it would come to the end of the evening shift and there would be nobody to take over from us at the end. There were no keys for the doors (since it was 24 hours) so it couldn't be locked up.

Nearly got left unattended with the doors unlocked for 8 hours a few times but something always got worked out.
