Yes my job is dog behaviour and training. One to one for behaviour problems.A dog with a behaviour problem needs help not punishment.0 -
OK, I've read the comments about muzzles, dog's recall blah blah blah
.
The simple point of fact is that dogs that are snappy and aggressive to other dogs are frightening not only to other dogs but also to people. On lead or off lead - who cares. It's scary all the same. On a walk today I have been agressively barked and snapped at by 3 dogs - 2 bulldog type dogs (1 very large) and 1 collie cross whilst walking my dog on a lead - he was just walking along and showed no interest in the other dogs. 2 of the dogs were so aggressive they dragged the owners down the road after me and I was actually scared I was going to get bitten.
I love dogs, I dislike the bad press they get and I believe every dog deserves a fair change. I still believe muzzles are sometimes necessary and I don't understand why it is such a big deal.
I would just like to reiterate that muzzles should only be neccessary until training kicks in.
The trainer I use in North London uses muzzles and the dogs have no problem with their facial communication.0 -
I guess that if you have a dog that is going to bite it should be muzzled.
The problem is that a lot, in fact most canine communication is misinterpreted and misunderstood by us.
If, for example, a dog bears his teeth it does not mean he is going to bite. It is a dog's way of avoiding having to bite, it's a warning, as is growling, snapping etc.
Most dog owners punish their dogs for trying to communicate with other dogs and so they up their efforts to keep dogs away.
Worst case scenario, happened here a couple of weeks go, (the result, not the punishment) is the dog that has been punished harshly CM fashion, choke chain, prong collar, e collar, alpha rolling. These dogs then redirect onto the person holding the lead when a dog appears.A dog with a behaviour problem needs help not punishment.0 -
Hi, just noticed the thread and wanted to say I know what a lot of you are going through. I got my fear aggressive rescue german sherpherd x rottie four years ago and he was a nightmare with other dogs to start with , would lunge and bark at every dog, even ones nowhere near him!
Over the years he has improved a lot, to the point where he has quite a few canine friends. It's as if he distrusts every dog initially (he will lunge at them if they approach him when he's on lead) but once he knows they won't harm him, he will let them jump on him, lick him, run round him etc, lol.
Anyway, letting him off is far too risky - a serial rabbit chaser and nearly got out onto a busy road once so would not take the chance unless I could find a 100% secure field but that's nigh on impossible.
I wanted to give him a bit more freedom and bought a long line, but found it was always getting wet or tangled round something, the extendable leads were always in danger of snapping as he is a strong dog.
I would recommend any of you to google Flexi Giant. They make a flexilead which is 28 ft long and mega strong, almost like a seatbelt material as opposed a thin cord. It lets you exercise your dog with the knowledge he is still under control but gives him a bit more freedom. The only downside is they are a bit expensive but mine has been worth every penny, nice to see he can explore a bit in the fields rather than being glued to my side on a short lead and trusting it won't snap if he suddenly makes a run for it! Hope this helps.0
