Hi - just thought I'd update and congratulate everyone else on their achievements :T. Also hi to any newbies - listen to Sue (and follow her pm it really does help) and the others that are are around a lot they do know what they are talking about and can be lifesavers when needed.

Is now 2months 3 weeks for me so still going strong - DH has been on and off like a yo-yo mainly when he gets bad health news which then doesn't help (kind of daft get told health is bad then do something bad for your health!) But I keep perservering with him - he will get there eventually.

Well done everyone and best wishes to all x
  • Feeling a lot better today. Had a good night's sleep. Still getting up some muck in the mornings but coughing much much less now. Eyes are less puffy, skin is brighter and I can kiss and cuddle my little ones without worrying about breathing stinky fag breath all over them.

    Oh seems much better too.

Welcome Mizzbiz. Our families don't know we smoke either (they used to but we never told them when we went back to it after our eldest was born). Like you I think they strongly suspect though. You can mask the smell but without being crude it's like going into the loo after someone's had a poo and sprayed air freshener. When I was pregnant with my first child oh gave up when I was 4 months gone and then started slipping up when I was around the 8 month mark. He used to come home from work smelling of cigs with a topnote of extra strong mints and aftershave. Non smokers really can smell them a mile off.

You are so right that the sooner you quit the better. My first attempt was at 26 - I lasted 6 months and then stupidly went back to it but I really regret that now. 12 years ago it wasn't quite as anti social as it is now - you could still smoke in most places for a start so there was more temptation to go back to it in a moment of weakness/drunkeness.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

    Good morning all.

Am feeling very positive today. Still can't quite get past the 2 per day, I think it is like a comfort blanket so I am not worrying because I know I will. Last night I had minor cravings after dinner but for the rest of the evening nothing, no cigarette at all from 5pm to 9am today:j . Going for long periods like that is giving me more confidence. The one I had today at 9am was the last one in my possession and "burning a hole in my pocket", as it were, rather than a necessity. I did get the munchies though so ate lots of carrots.

Why is it that men seem to find it so much easier to quit? Must be a psychology thing.

Good to see that we are all doing wonderfully well, from giving up completely to cutting down drastically. eating frenzy has kicked in for me and am managing to munch my way through packets of biscuits at a time. However, am trying to counteract that with walking to and from work and taking the dog out over the fields. Still feeling very tired in the evening and am sure that this is a symptom of not smoking, does anyone else get that? Have noticed that my gums are bleeding when I clean my teeth which I understand is a symptom of giving up as well. Apart from that all is well, periods between thinking about a cig are getting longer and I have less of that 'restless' feeling. I think my skin might look brighter as well or that could just be wishful thinking!

    Hello Everyone...
    * stroppy creeps into room and goes and stands in the naughty corner with hands on head.....*
Well what can I say, I had the most awful day yesterday craving wise,I got throught the whole day and then last night went into full on panic mode....which resulted into 2 large glasses of wine...which resulted in more of a panic and half a cigarette hurridly smoked out the back door...what a stupid thing to do,I woke up at 3 in the morning very cross at myself!
I woke up this morning with sore tongue with ulcers on it and feeling generally rubbish and an enormous amount of guilt! Not wanted a cigarette all day today which has been great but once again it comes to this time of night and I want one  Have managed to resist tonight and will be off to bed in a minute....but i cant keep going to bed this early its just not me, i think that is where my problem lies....day times fine (like the smell of house/fingers/chest feeling better)...gets to night time and its my time to relax and i just cant concentrate on anything.
sorry for the ramble and hopefully tomorow will be better
well done you guys keep at it and dont do a me....it makes you feel really rubbish!

  • Hi All,
I'm new to this and don't post on any message boards, so please go gentle on me. I'm Carl and have smoked since 11yrs old, i'm 34 now. My mom died when I was 15, and I really need to give up, I'm single and live in a high rise flat, I sometimes have pains in my shoulder area, which gets worse when I breathe. I have tried to stop several times, tried patches but they either slip off or don't stick properly. I don't want to be ill, like my mom was as she lost her leg through smoking. The problem is I'm okay sometimes during the day, but it's in the evenings, when I'm on my own or when I have been paid and go into a shop and temptation gets me. I have found that this forum is great inspiration, and I think everyone on here should be proud of their achievements. I am definitely going to quit tomorrow. I have only got 3 left.
I hope I can do it.... Thanks all for the inspiration.
  • Stroppy, Stroppy, Stroppy - you muppet!!!! I am not going to have a rant about what a stupid thing that was to do - you obviously already know that and I think you're doing a pretty good job of beating yourself up about it!

Basically, you now have a simple choice - either hurl yourself off the wagon completely or strap yourself back in for the long haul. Sadly, there is no in between.

None of your reasons for quitting have changed or gone away in the week since you quit- smoking is still expensive, anti-social, smelly, humiliating and, in all probability, it will kill you slowly and painfully.

Sure, you can decide to start smoking again, but it's obvious from your posts that you're a sensible kind of person. You'll feel poor, smelly and unhealthy and you'll be back here sooner or later. You'll just have to go through that tough first week all over again.

If you decide that you've had a lapse but you want to stay quit, then you have some hard days ahead but you CAN DO IT!!! The little nicotine monster will be playing all sorts of tricks on you - it will tell you that one cigarette didn't hurt, why not have another, you can do it, you can be an 'occasional' smoker or a 'social' smoker or a 'weekend' smoker or a 'glass of wine' smoker.

Well, believe you me, you bloody well can't!!! Been there, done that and got the t-shirt. I was convinced that I could be the exception to the rule, I could smoke the odd cigarette when I went out for a drink. Sadly, that became when I stayed in with a glass of wine as well. And when I had a smoking friend round, and when I has my morning coffee, and when I walked the dog...do you get the picture?

With quitting it's all or nothing so you have to make your mind up now. You can't have the odd one - none of us can.

I really, really hope that you give yourself a bloomin' good talking to and that you decide to stay with us. I know that between us we can come up with something for you to do in the evenings that doesn't involve ciggies and, as I've said before, it's only for a while until your brain catches up with your body and realises that your a non-smoker! I used to cram all my smoking into the daytime whilst children and hubby were out of the house so I had the reverse problem to you - when I quit, the days seemed a week long and the nights flew by! Now, my mind is getting used to the fact that I don't smoke and I hardly miss it at all - I PROMISE!

Please, please don't give up giving up - I send a big cyber hug (as well as a big cyber kick up the bum!) from me to you xxx

  • Hi carl_e49,

Sorry to be so rude - I wasn't ignoring you, just kicking a complete numpty where she deserves it! Welcome on board - we have all been where you are and recognise that strange mix of fear and excitement that you are going through the night before your quit! I stopped just over 3 months ago and though I had some tough times, I am SO glad that I could stick it out with the help of my cyber-buddies here.

You'll see that we've all used different methods of quitting - some of us swear by nicotine replacement, some have had great results using Champix, some have gritted their teeth and gone cold turkey. Personally, I SWEAR by he Allan Carr book which made complete sense to me and made it virtually impossible for me to carry on smoking.

Whichever route you take, quitting will be the best thing you ever do. Smoking stinks, it's expensive, it's a really embarrassing thing to have to admit to and it will almost certainly kill you.

Keep posting here - we can offer advice, support, tips, a shoulder to cry on, a kick up the backside - whatever you need to get you from A to B.
