As I said before, I want to cut down how much I drink not stop, so I would have a glass of wine on my birthday, but then be extra strict the next day so I didn't slip back into drinking everyday'

I’ve been lurking since thread started but haven’t posted because my aims seem very modest and motivation superficial compared with posters who want to be completely AF. But as above poster (thanks miamoo) has reminded us this is also about cutting down, so here goes:
My aim is simply (!) to break the habit of drinking every day. I was on a bottle of red a day and creeping towards more particularly if it was a wine box or I was drinking with someone else (my ‘share’ was always more than half). I’m not including holidays (didn’t start until 4th Jan), weekends (Fri, Sat, Sun) or planned mid-week meals out with friends (3 planned). So my aim for January is 13/31.
I’m ashamed to say (as I know I should be thinking about long term health issues) but I’m motivated more by:
    • saving calories
    • saving money
    • immediate health benefits like clear head, eyes and skin
So far I’ve managed 3/3 and plan to make tonight 4/4 before my w/end off. It’s not been easy. We have a fully stocked drinks cupboard, all we don’t have until I shop tomorrow is cheap red wine. Last night was hard as I was watching Rick Stein and he had a huge glass of red tempting me! I have slept very badly all week (normally wine knocks me out for a few hours).
Last year I managed about 10 weeks but then in March I had a big birthday, took 2 weeks off, then it was Easter holiday, then…. This year I’m going to try again and all of you are helping me. Thanks. (sorry for such a long post!)

Welcome aboard the (usually) happy wagon, maman

I'll add you to the list. Well done so far!! :T

    Thanks for the welcome.

'but I would hate to see some of GCs broad comments putting people off posting here'.

    And thanks NTC.
  • Welcome maman. :hello:

We are a happy bunch Lurky :D

I think this is one of the things with email and forums - smilies can't always set the tone, so we have difficulty in interpretting exactly what people are saying.

I hope I haven't upset anyone this morning

    Best Wishes

    Welcome Maman :D

BHB is right, I don't think GC's comments are there to either be brash, opinionated or anything else like that, just the way it's read. I think the comments GC has given on this forum are helpful especially to those that do have a 'problem'.

Lurky, this is a happy wagon, we just love a debate!!!

Yes I don't see anything wrong with us having differing viewpoints as long as we are all moving in the right direction of having a more healthy relationship with alcohol.

I can see a good argument coming on :rotfl:

ETA: everyone's opinions and experiences are different and should be. I think I can identify with GC's comments because I can not stop drinking for a month or two or indeed a day or two without having to question my every thought and action. This means that I am controlled by alcohol.

I agree with Jo and GC .
I think I WAS controlled by alcohol and could be again if I allowed it.It was proved when I thought I could let it back into my life ....just for a drink on my birthday. No sooner was the door opened than it took control again.

So I was (?still am) an alcoholic.
For me it has to be all or nothing:cry: .

    Welcome Maman.

Looking good for AF today - avoided buying at the supermarket and I have a German lesson tonight and drinking just means that I'm paying someone good money to teach me something I won't remember in the morning!!

    Welcome Maman :D

Nice to see everyone has calmed down and is taking on board everyone's point of view. :D

I think some of us are all or nothing, and some of us are not and can control. We never know which one we are until we are honest about our own behaviour and control levels. That is the thing we probably ignore deep inside ourselves until something triggers it off, no matter how small and trivial it may seem. I don't think I've opened up enough to decide which one I am:o

What I have decided is this virtual support has had more impact on my thinking than I could ever have imagined, still takes all sorts eh?!:T

Well I'm not bothered by alcohol today and I'm looking forward to watching my black books DVD with a mug of hot chocolate:rotfl:
