I try to break off the stalks of brocolli, but I am never sure if that's allowed or not, so I only do it if nobody's looking and I feel very brave.
Just want to say that I bought some brocolli today, and I found myself checking each one for the shortest stalk and really hacked off about buying any stalk at all. But I didn't dare break any off. Wondered if any shoppers around me were also MSEers waiting to pounce if I accidentally picked up the WRONG piece with a longer stalk.

So thanks guys, another thing to worry about.

The stalk is actually delicious and has just as much flavour as the florets! Chop it up and cook. We waste so much good food.

What you need to look for with any food of this type is freshness! Check the base of the vegetable. It should look new cut and without any discolouration or sealing / drying over the cut.

I never buy brocolli, cauliflower or any cabbage without looking at it's bottom for signs of freshness. A lot of the supermarket stuff is days old, and therefore has little nutritional value and taste.

I have never tried it but have read that some people use the stalks in stir frys.
