Free Mobile phone for kids.

I'm sorry if I am double posting here, but I did a search and nothing came up.
There was an article in this month's "What Mobile" about parents wanting to keep a track on their kids but, not wanting to give them a mobile due to possible muggings or huge bills from texting etc.
There were two phones which were mentioned in the article - one of which was Teddyphone.
It looks like a teddy, it can only dial numbers which the parent has pre-programmed in, and cannot be used for texting.
It also has a "panic button" (when the child hits it, it dials you.)
And a child tracking facility.
It is free to get, there is no line line rental - you only pay for calls made.
It's also kinda cute....

Filled in the form for this and got a reply saying thank you someone will contact you shortly about your order . I thought they'd just post it. Excellent idea though as long as I'm not plagued with calls or mail0

dont need one (no kids) but actually a very good idea. Haven't seen anything like it and I'm surprised the main telephone manufacturers aren't coming up with stuff like this.
I might get one for my girlfriend, she makes far too many calls. If she can just dial her mum, gran, her best mate and myself she would save so much money.
The ability to track her to make sure she's doing my shopping in town would be great too :P0 -
It is cute, and a great idea. Iv'e just ordered one, spoiled for chioce on who to give it to. Might just keep it for a birthday or christmass pressie. By the way thanks.

I applied for this by phone before Christmas and I'm still waiting!
Was told they were sending them out straight away but since had a letter saying they had been in great demand and would have to wait a couple of weeks. I was actually just talking about them this morning and saying I'd have to give them a ring to chase it up.
Incidentally I had to give bank details for DD so hope it's not a scam.
Anyone had one yet?

Am I missing something here?
Surely any child young enough to agree to holding a plastic teddy shouldn't be out by themselves anyway?:smileyhea "here, hare, here" :smileyhea0 -
Must admit, Angel, that I wondered if it was too babyish for my 8 yr old but ordered anyway.
I'm glad I did because she's just walked in while the piccy was on screen, asked what it was and then said "Cool - can I have one?"
When you think about it there's loads of stuff around now that might be classed as babyish that even adults wear/use.
Now all I need is for them to send me the blooming phone!!!

we got our 11 yr old a cheap mobile and a 02 sim card.. she has free txts and i would prefer her to be able to txt me.. she doesnt make loads of calls but if she did it would start coming out of her pocket money.
the idiots who steal/mug the phones will still do it with these ones as they will think they just novelty phones.
but anything that makes our kids safe gets my vote..Those we love don't go away,They walk beside us every day,Unseen, unheard, but always near,
Still loved, still missed and very dear
Our thoughts are ever with you,Though you have passed away. And those who loved you dearly,
Are thinking of you today.0 -
Last time when this offer was on the site there was some question about what happens at the end of the "contract" - whether you would have to pay and also if the phone were lost whether you would have to replace it.
I find that my old "brick" mobile makes a great way to make sure my kids can stay in touch when they go away from home eg stay with granny without being too worried that anyone will want to steal it. I normally make sure that the SIM card only has a few pounds of credit as well.
Learn from the mistakes of others - you won't live long enough to make them all yourself.0 -
