Are you left-handed? apparently all bread knives are designed for right handers(typical). It's something to do with the serrations on the knife.I'm left handed and manage ok with an ordinary knife(as do my Mum,Dad and OH-also lefties),but some lefties don't-we've had a lot of practice ;)

In Worcester we have a left-handed shop that sells left-handed bread knives.

that's very interesting, because the person who ended up with the bread knife from Lidl that I mentioned in my earlier post, told me that they reckoned the serrations were 'angled the wrong way'. so maybe it's a left-handed knife & that explains the difficulty I was having with it. I must borrow it back & try it out, I'm intrigued now :)
  • I read somewhere that running the knife under the hot tap first to heat it helps with cutting fresh bread. Worth a try

  • I always use my electric carving knife, an ancient one that we had as a wedding present over 27 years ago. I wait until the bread's cool and then slowly slice it into nice neat slices (OH is terribly impressed by this, he can't do it half as well). Works brilliantly.

Oh, and I'm left handed too, have you looked at https://www.anythinglefthanded.co.uk There's a bread knife there for £13.95 I think. I love their products, they work really well for us special people ;)

    Hope this helps. FF

Another thread on bread slicing with links to more is below. This includes, I think, the handly Lakeland Bread Slicer gadget thingy.

I am left-handed too lol! My post above works for me.

    Its a pain sometimes.

I am of a generation which was made to write with the right hand at school. Anything I learned to do before the age of 7 is done with my right hand - so I use a knife and fork the right-handed way and a spoon with my left hand. Its fun watching strangers faces sometimes!!

I've just ordered the extra long serrated bread knife from Lakeland-according to the blurb it's very good as can get a good sawing action.

also - don't forget to add a small amount ( teaspoon or so ) of (value) instant mash powder to your flour when you load up the BM. it's provides some extra starch to hold the rise and makes the bread a little more solid and easier to saw, erm I mean slice.;)

have fun with your panny BM !
