We had thought about a leather sofa but I'm not sure about them - I have visions of ths children sticking to them in the summer....I like some of the sofas in sofasofa but am a bit wary of buying without trying - we tried the one in dfs (the top one) and it was THE most comfortable sofa i have ever sat on..maybe they put extra padding in their showroom ones?!

Good thing about leather is that if the kids spill anything its easily cleaned up where as fabric it can be ruined.

We have a 2yr and 6yr old and had a leather sofa all the way through without problems and loads of things spilt :)

John Peters furniture is excellent. We have a leather suite and at three years old it is still pristine (and we used it every day)
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Our sofa was from Harveys and its till looks like new after 6 years, it was made in Italy but i think they are now made in the far east nowadays but not sure.

it's the filling that's different. the latter will require more attention.

i have two sets, one from allders with the solid foam filling, which are still going strong after 6 years of jumping and lord knows what else.

i have another set from sofa workshop, which are used (rarely) and are filled with the softer, almost down, type material. if they were used on a daily basis (besides being velvet), they would require plumping every day.

now whether or not he makes more money on selling those to you, or whether he's trying to help, I don't know.
Remember the time he ate my goldfish? And you lied and said I never had goldfish. Then why did I have the bowl Bart? Why did I have the bowl?
  • Thanks all, we are off to the showroom again tomorrow to have a proper look and make a final decison....

He may well just be trying to be helpful and maybe i should listen to him, I have a 9yr old, a 5 yr old and a 4 month old so i would prefer to have a sofa that will be able to withstand family life and not constantly need plumping in order to look presentable...

Its just knowing what's best and not falling for the sales talk!!

what about looking for one that has washable covers?

  • The sofas I have now have washable covers and i am ashamed to say i have only washed them once!! So i thought i wouldn't bother this time seeing as i appear to be so lazy about it...
  • Our DFS sofas are not great. For a start the delivery was much much longer than they said, then the interest free year had kicked in from when we signed the agreement, not when we got the goods. The guy had ordered the wrong item and when it was delivered they tryed to insist it was me who had ordered the wrong thing....ummm hello, we were sitting on the sofa range we wanted when he took the order.

The leather is not good, the build quality is quite poor. I want to change it but am still paying off the finance!!

    I would go to IKEA
  • I bought from DFS and cannot stress enough that I would never, ever, buy from them again. The sales people were manipulative in the store (similar to OP's situation with 'plumping up'), lied repeatedly and once they had the money the staff who arranged delivery were rude and unpleasant. The delivery men were the only ones who told the truth - saying that the sales people 'will say anything to get a sale'.

The sofa is ok, nothing fantastic, but I'd rather sit on beanbags than buy another one from them! I'd go for Ikea, lots of theirs have washable covers, they offer good guarantees and you'll get what you pay for.
