well thanks i was also looking to hav egg card for the reason but now i'll avoid
Why would you avoid based on one person's experience that seems to be down to the Shell garage in question rather than Egg? Egg itself seems to have done a generally good job in refunding the cashback despite the fact that the garage tried to mislead the OP.

For what it's worth, I've had an Egg Money card for a couple of years now and my OH has had an Egg card for even longer, and we've had overall a very positive experience with them. It's a shame they've withdrawn Egg Money for new customers, though.

However if you just want to get cashback on fuel, I agree that it's better value to get the Shell Mastercard from Citi rather than the normal Egg card (though remember you can only redeem that cashback against further purchases of Shell fuel).

It isn't just one person who has evidently experienced this. Given that I've purchased fuel five times at four different Shell petrol stations - all of which are on the list you can call up on the Shell website via the link on the Egg site - I've been credited with instant cashback on two of those occasions only. Each sale has produced a receipt - in fact some of the transactions were done at the pay at pump so no chance of the cashier ringing it through as something different.

It could, of course, just be a glitch in the Egg systems, but Egg have been (generally) okay in the past with the random glitch affecting me at the most inopportune moment.

I'll wait and see what the explanation is early in the week.

Ok then, two :) Seriously, although I'm sure that you are not the only two to have experienced problems with the offer, I would expect the vast majority of people have not had these problems (supported by the fact that in our household alone, I can report two people who have had no problems) and two reports on a forum is, in my humble opinion, not a solid reason for deciding to 'avoid' the Egg card (now if hundreds of people were reporting the same issue, I could understand it, but based on just two?). No offence was intended by my original post (or this one, for that matter).

None taken. I'd be surprised if there were not hundreds of people affected given the number of Egg Money cardholders there are likely to be. There are, of course, those people who have never received the instant cashback - there appears to be some on this thread here : http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1248279

and from the replies Egg have been giving it appears they don't really know whether it's Egg Money or Egg Visa that should be getting it.

I have no real grind with the fact that it's pence I'm losing out on. It's the fact that Egg and Shell are actively promoting the product to ensure you purchase from one specific retailer, then don't appear to honour their side of the bargain.

    Should be both ...

Cash back offers (valid from 1 October 2008)

    1. Unless otherwise stated, the instant cash back from our selected online retailers will appear on your Account as a credit to your Egg credit card at the same time as your Transaction appears. The cash back will show as "INSTANT CASH BACK", which you can view in your online recent Transactions and your Statement. All offers are valid for Egg Card and Egg Money customers.
  • I filled up at Shell, Headington (Oxford) with an Egg Card the other day. The receipt correctly says I bought petrol, but the cashback has not appeared on the card balance even though the debit itself has.
  • I have had to email them twice in succession to have my instant cash back applied. I will not be doing this again!!!
  • I was getting my instant cashback with no problems until the new year, but my last three transactions haven't gone through automatically. They have however credited my account for each transaction I've pointed out to them, but it is a bit of a pain having to chase each one up.
  • I haven't had a reply from them and I've stopped using my Egg Money card out of principle. I've got a decent wad of cashback to be credited on next month. Can't see me starting to use it again though - can only imagine that they will relaunch it with reduced benefits (if at all).
