Some Egg Card customers might be aware that they are offering 2% cashback on all fuel at Shell until March. Twice this hasn't been honoured for me. The first time Egg apologised and said that they were having a lot of similar complaints and gave me my cashback ... back.
However, it's happened again and this is my email response to Egg:
Dear Egg,
Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, yesterday I filled up with petrol at a Shell station in Northfield, Birmingham but when I went to the counter to pay, as soon as the cashier saw my Egg Card he asked me to pay by cash. I said that I didn't have sufficient cash to cover the £12 of petrol I had used. He then looked shifty and said "have you got another card then mate, cuz we're having trouble with Egg Cards at the moment init". I apologised and said this is the only form of payment available to me at this time. He shrugged his shoulders and said "ok give it me". The transaction went through the Shell till without a glitch but when I got home I discovered he hadn't registered my £12 purchase as petrol. Instead he registered 2 £5 E Top-Ups and another item (not sure what it's supposed to be) for £2. Thus, avoiding the cashback on Shell fuel.
I will be going to Martin Lewis's forums with this issue just to warn other consumers, but it would be very much appreciated if you could assure me that Egg will refund this cashback as you said you would with the other Shell fuel problem I had. I will ensure that consumers on the forums are made aware of Egg's response.
I await your reply.

I keep forgetting that I get instant cashback on fuel at Shell so have only used my egg money card in there twice, and on the most recent transaction there was no cash back given...0

I mainly use my Asda credit card for petrol because of the 2p off a litre (there's one very close to my workplace and I go past it on the way home etc).
But, I went to Shell the other day and used my Egg Money card. This was mainly just out of curiosity because the terms of the cash back offer refers to 'Egg Card' (the capital C is used when referring to the Visa card) but also 'Egg credit card', and I wanted to see if the cash back would go through for the Egg Money card.
It's all gone through fine for me. The cash back shows up like the other offers they do, a debit on the same day as the transaction. I paid for a sandwich at the same time as the petrol. All through in one transaction and the 2% was off the total amount, not just the petrol amount.
I'd say the OP should focus their complaint at the petrol station. After all, it's them who have incorrectly processed the payment.
Just a quick note. It's not really worthwhile saying things like you'll be posting it on forums etc. If anything, it actually makes things more difficult for you.
It can just give the impression that you're being petty and/or being unreasonable. I'm not saying that's what you're doing, but it's the impression given to whoever gets to deal with the complaint.
Whenever I get told things like that I just think "so what?".0 -
I've posted on another thread - I got the cashback, then it's suddenly stopped. The station I bought fuel from is on the list from Egg/Shell and I have my receipt identifying it was petrol I bought. I've queried this with Egg to see what's happening with it. I started off not getting it, then I got it, now I don't get it anymore. It's the principle of it more than anything else. If Egg are going to have this arrangement with Shell, then it should work when it's supposed to given that it's encouraging you to purchase petrol/diesel, etc from one specific retailer.0

I've just noticed that they stopped giving me instant cashback on 24 December, but gave me it all through the first part of the month. Since Christmas Eve I've not had any CB on petrol bought. I'll wait for their response to my polite enquiry.0

Quick update:
Shell/Egg has refunded the cashback on the original transaction. Haven't received a reply to the above email; presumably because they're on their hols.
FYI, the problems I have had were at two different Shell stations.0 -
Quick update:
Egg have replied to say they can confirm that the cashback of 12p has been refunded.
Hang on a moment ... 12p?! Shouldn't 2% of £12 be 24p? And that is the query I have sent back to them.0 -
well thanks i was also looking to hav egg card for the reason but now i'll avoid0

I used my Egg Money card at a Shell station last week and got the 2% instant cashback no problem. I used the Pay-At-Pump service. This space has been intentionally left blank0

Have no problems with 2p off litre at Asda with an Asda Card or money back on a Shell Card. Two of the best offers particularly if you fill up often.0
