Um. Yer wha'?...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
It's no secret that oil/coal/gas is running out, of course governments are panicking!
And yeah bitterly cold in Oldham this morning
Oldham can get chilly as I remember it.
164 metres above sea level. I made my first business deal on Oldham market as a 8 year old kid... on second-hand day... buying a toy-tank from one stall and selling it on our stall for twice the price.Boundary Park is anecdotally known as being the coldest ground in the football league which earns it the nickname Ice Station Zebra.0 -
Yummy house...is this the Hall House that can't have central heating due to it's wooden frame?neverdespairgirl wrote: »It's great, I go and stay there, but don't pay the heating bills (-:
How is it heated out of interest?0 -
there is an oil-fired Aga, which also heats water, and a supplementry boiler for water as well.
One downstairs room with a tiled floor has underfloor heating (oil-fired) as does the downstairs hall. That's pretty much it, the bedrooms have thick duvets and the odd electric heater that my mother hates anyone turning on....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

I'd tell your dad to get planting some veg on the lawn.....it's going to be a toughy few years ahead.;)
And definitely some trees! Tell him ash grows quickly and provides very good logs for a woodburner. We are currently cutting about 9 feet a year off 30 in our garden and they regrow that in the year
Has he thought about a woodchip boiler? Plenty of room outside for him to have one and would decimate his heating bills
(We have a cart shed like one of those outbuildings at the end of our garden but OH built round it for stability of the building - it was wonderful, stone floors, gorgeous - but now full of his junk that may come in useful one day
)
Just noticed the comment re not being able to have CH due to timber frame - why is that please? Ive seen many a timber frame with CH, including Grade 1*? Is it just this particular property?0 -

Yup, ash is fast and good for logs, but not for gardens. As an experiment, in the spring of 2006, I counted the seedlings removed from just 1 square metre of garden at the house I inherited. It was was 54. I wouldn't have minded so much if the tree had been in our garden, but it was two gardens away!
I suppose if you coppice, there is less of a probem though.0 -

My parents are manic trees planters. My mother and bruv dug up the ancient orchard and planted in total nearly 100 fruit trees, and my mother also grew 300 oak seedling for acorns. My Dad's planted about 100 of those seedlings, and also beech, hawthorn, ash, and hazel.Just noticed the comment re not being able to have CH due to timber frame - why is that please? Something to do with drying out the oak frame - I'll ask....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

Have you any figures and links on this one? (cos I don't believe you unless you really do mean "reduce by 1/10th" rather than "reduce to 1/10th";) )
Replacement heating system at hound hovel is a "hot topic" at the moment.
The big advantage of ash wood is that it can be burnt green, while all other trees need at least 12 months to dry out for a nice clean burn.
You don't want creosote gunge clogging the chimney and making a mega fire hazard.

NDG - how old are mum & dad?0 -
Try sleeping on silk sheets - they keep you lovely and warm.

Cashmere sheets are warm too - but are a bit costly.
I sleep on silk sheets and even with no clothes on I always stay warm as toast.:A0
