He wants an iPhone [rolls eyes]

To answer the main points:
1 - Diaries are fine but syncing multiple calenders in different colours etc, is beyond the wit of outlook. Maybe your nice macbook will handle it better. Really it's no better than most phones for doing that sort of stuff.
2 - When I got my iphone, I tried leaving my ipod at home. That lasted around 2 days until I got sick of having to recharge my phone at 3 in the afternoon. Yes it was a novelty and they've drastically improved battery life but it's still a lot to ask for a battery that small to be a workhorse for the whole day.
If you both want one then get them. It's not a sensible choice but they are very shiny and cool. As I say, I've got one and I love it but I could never justify it as a business tool or efficiency aid. Yes, it helps out but no better than many other smartphones I've used.
It has decent calender, good email and excellent online capabilities but there are still areas where it is lacking for me, mainly wrt syncing calenders and notes with outlook (I would love to have seperate work and home calenders on the phone but this is somewhat lacking.

I have separate home and work calendars on my iPhone and sync them using MobileMe.
I agree the battery life isn't fantastic but I do use apps that use it up quickly, so I got a car charger and a Power Monkey which helps!

I got my dh an ipod touch for christmas and we are loving it, this is just to tide me over until my contract expires and i can get my iphone. The only thing is that we are having to charge it every day but then we are surfing playing games etc. Even watched the will young - jeremy clarkson interview on iplayer. Absolutely fantastic bit of kit. Although haven't even broken out the earphones yet. hubby is hooked on the physics app and has just completed all the levels tonight.£2.00 Savers Club = £34.00 So Far

Care to explain how? Apple/o2 changed the procedure with the release of the 3G and the paperwork is now done in store. It's been a while since it was possible to buy it and leave the shop without filling in the contract.
Or are you thinking of buying a payg version?====0 -

or go for the sony ericsson xperia X1. Lovely phone. Also shows the world that you are not a mindless sheep that has to have an iphone because they are "cool" at the moment.JeremyMarried 9th May 20090

On the subject Calendars and the costs of mobileme...
may I recomenend https://www.nuevasync.com/
(See here for guide on using http://www.ianfernando.com/2008/sync-google-calendar-with-iphone-3g/)
I use this to sync the Iphone with google calendars, once my iphone is sync to google, there are a number of ways of syncing that calendar with other applications.
Best to think of the google calendar as an intermitant way point, once it's there you can do loads with it.
I use a google application for syning the google calendar with outlook. The google app can be found on their help pages.
The great benefit to this (for me) is nuevasync is free. The data exchange between the iphone and google is automatic, and as i said once you have your iphone calendar replicated in google there are many ways of syncing that calendar with other mail/diary applicaitons. The only place where success comes before work is the dictionary…
