I am so worried about that not happening on my account that i set up itunes and pay for my sons music downloads.....Blackpool_Saver is female, and does not live in Blackpool0

Does that argument apply to child pornography too?
How can something be "stopped by the government" beyond them making it illegal?Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.0 -
If the world is so "bothered" about p2p file sharing, why is it not stopped by the government? I will tell you why, because there are too many "I am going to tell the teacher" type people around bleating and it is not a great issue becasue nothing is being done about it. Who said WinMx?
Last I heard, the government have left it to the ISPs to control better. If not enough is seen to have been done by this April (If memory serves correct), then theyre going to do more on the matter themselves. I personally know a few people who've been sent letters detailing what they downloaded illegally and when and they should stop with a slapped hand. I believe its 3 strikes and your in court with a hefty fine (and prison maybe?)
Its the other main reason I really WOULDNT run Limewire, as thats the main one theyre looking at I believe!:idea:0 -
Leo ~
Entirely upto you (But it looks like youve made up your mind already anyways)
Limewire is mostly illegal. meaning whoever pays the internet bill COULD end up in court with upto (I believe) a 20k fine (Very few people with 'that' much money lying around these days)
And Limewire is FULL of trojans etc which means its almost certainly going to make a mess of his computer sooner or later.
My personal take is this ~
IF someone posts that theyve downloaded Limewire and they didnt know any better then Ill help them. If they even post they knew it was a bad idea but thought theyd give it a go I 'might' help them (Depends on the circumstances)
But if you come on here asking to help clean your sons computer id be VERY reluctant to do so as you know the risks already. I know its HIS laptop. But its YOUR house with YOUR houserules surely?
Your call.........:idea:0 -
Just to add that the music and film industry now routinely pay companies to put fake and malware infested files on the Limewire, bittorrent and other P2P networkds.0
-
I know that the film and music industry actually release their OWN pirate copies so they can track them!
Thats how a lot of people are being caught out when they receive their 'slapped hand' letters off their ISPs:idea:0 -

Hey hang on a mo.....
I did not know the risks at all.
I googled 'limewire'....maybe you should do the same?
There is nothing in the first page of google results that says that limewire is 'mostly illegal'. Have a look for yourself.
The fifth link down the results page, is the download.com link and if you click on it all you get is the following page
http://www.download.com/LimeWire/3000-2196_4-10051892.html
The reviews that I scanned through on that page do mention that if you download software you may get viruses, which incidently is what I had heard anyway, but I did not know it was mainly 'illegal' stuff on there.
So, in short, I did a bit of research, and found nothing untoward. He downloaded limewire and he is using it.
According to some on here it is not right that I monitor what he does on his lappy although in view of what you have said I have told him that he should not use it whilst connected to my network as it is mainly 'illegal' stuff.
In view of your comments I wouldn't come on here and ask for you help now anyway.
I would ask for someone else's help...anyone that would be prepared to help me would be appreciated.

Historically it's the people sharing the files who get dragged over the coals more than the end users.
At the car boot sales it's the guy selling the disks who gets jobbed, not the guy buying them.
It's a similar story for the filesharers, it's the uploaders who tend to get targetted, more so then the solely downloaders.
If you read the reports of the busts, they single out a few albums, movies etc. which the accused has uploaded/sold etc. it never mentions what has been downloaded.
It doesn't make it right, but you can prevent Limewire from uploading any files. It goes against the whole P2P ethic but at least you can't get done for sharing files. Have a look through the options and close the upload slots (can't recall the exact options).0 -

I never said Limewire ITSELF is illegal. Im saying the vast majority of downloadable content (probably well over 95%), is illegal
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Is_downloading_songs_from_Limewire_illegal_or_legal
Its the same with ANY P2P software (Bit torrent, Bearshare etc)
And the fact its illegal I couldnt personally care less, what you download is upto you.
What IM saying is you knowingly posted that limewire IS going to make a mess of yours sons computer, and you expect one of us (NOT me now I see), to come running to aid you for FREE.
Do you 'honestly' think thats fair? For the record, Limewire is what I would class as the VERY worst P2P program for 'trojans' etc. The amount of people I know have got infected just by downloading a bit of music is unbelievable.
I spend quite a bit of my own time helping other people out (And im not getting into this debate, but outside this forum in the real world I help people with things I shouldnt). Most of the people that post on here dont have anywhere else to turn (especially in these credit crisis times), and ill happily help them.
If you think you DESERVE free help for knowingly putting dodgy software which you ADMIT will most likely make a mess on a computer then im sorry. I think your wrong.............:idea:0 -

I don't think that I 'expect' or 'deserve' anything and I certainly wouldnt 'expect' anyone to come 'running to my aid'....I would merely ask for help, thats all. If anyone wanted to help then thats great, if they didn't then nothing is lost.
I am aware that help on here is free, and I do believe that it is appreciated. But what more can we do to thank someone, other than to press the thanks button?
I can see that you, and others, spend considerable amounts of time helping people on here for free. I read your posts, and others posts, with interest. I follow whole threads through to conclusion and I can see the many people that you have helped are appreciative, as indeed it is only polite to be.
I posted after reading on download.com that he may pick up some viruses and other stuff.
Incidently, I would only help him to clean his lappy once if he did pick up something.
If help came along then thats great....if it didn't then it wouldnt be the end of the world.
