...but some risks are known and not worth taking. Why buy a remould for £25 when you can get a NEW one for an extra £5-10??? Im not an over precautionary, just sensible when it comes to something that potentially endangers myself/my family in the car/other road user/pedestrians if it were one that had damage & had escaped the random performance test...:A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things. I'd have retreads and remoulds on a wagon. I'd have remoulds on a car but only from Colway whose remould tyres are widely used in motorsport.
FYI, the tyres on jumbo jets are quite often remoulds so it doesn't mean they're necessarily a bad thing.
Also FYI, many bus and coach companies operate their buses/coaches on remoulds and/or retreads. They have rolling contracts with the major tyre manufacturers and send the tyres back to be remoulded or retreaded.Lack of money is the root of all evil.

Hasn't every motor ve-hickle on the roads got part worn tyres...?!
Unless you buy a brand new car then you'd never know about the tyres history...
Only time I use brand new tyres is for stuff upto 195 size cos they can be very cheap. Anything over 205 I use part worns...0 -
As mentioned, you can get a 'new' tyre for about the £$£ of re-treads. Which isn't too enviromently friendly, as these budget tyres come from Eastern Europe, or China, don't last very long & end up being scrapped.
Re-treads were made in the UK, but not so much now.
& as Harvey says, part worns can get you a branded tyre, for less, too. But make sure the amount of predicted wear = good value, for you.

It's true that retreads are used on many coaches, trucks and even airliners. As long as you get them from a reputable source, so you can be sure the tyres they supply will conform to various strict regulations, there's no reason to doubt their safety.
Of course, they won't last as long as new tyres. But given the lower cost, they will prove better value, and be more environmentally friendly.
I suggest you check the Retread Manufacturers Association website for more info about retreads and a list of local stockists. But even if there aren't any locally, you can order them for delivery to a local fitter.
I found this link to the RMA site in KwikGuides.com's guide to Cutting my Car Costs ... the 'Parts & Servicing' page.

Safety on part worns are exaggerated. I know people who do 100k miles a year using part worns for the last 15/20 years, several people infact, none of them had accidents due to their tyres. If you have a reputable source, choose a good quality tyre, 5-6mm on, they are much better than your cheap nasty branded tyres that actually give poor performance, wear and value for money. The place wear i buy my part worns, the guy has thousands of customers who always opt for his part worns rather tyres made from some unknown company.0
