Retread tyres or not? advice please

hello there. Need some advice/views/experiences please...

We need to change 3 tyres on our car (185/65/15T) and i'm trying to do the cheapest (but safest) way possible....loss of job doesn't help...but that's another story.
A friend of mine told me they bought retread tyres somewhere nearby at a reasonable price...I didn't know about them... R they ok?
I drive mainly in town (not daily) and rarely on motorways and if so never above 80mph...

thanx for your help as always.

Never, Ever skimp on tyres. Even if you don't drive out of town imagine how you would feel if you knocked down a child when you might have been able to stop or swerve round on decent tyres...

There are plenty of ways to save on motoring costs that don't involve compromises in safety - such as cheaper fuel, downgrading to a smaller car, washing by hand, car sharing and walking/cycling short journeys.

If you must go down the retread route make sure you get them from a reputable source. In theory retreads can be as safe as originals (and better for the environment).

Also get all 4 tyres. Keep the same brand/tyre of tyre the same across each axel for maximum safety.
  • agree, dont skimp on tyres, retreads, remoulds inferior and dont last as long

  • Have a browse on Camskills.co.uk, you will find good quality tyres in your size eg. ToyoCF1 @ £35.23 each free delivery.
Good quality stuff there, Vredesteins from about £38.
I would recommend the Vredestein quatrac 2's if you can stretch to £42 a corner, all season very good tyres, Vred's made in Holland.
At those prices i wouldn't consider remoulds.

Find a handy little place to change them over for you, or alternatively find a good independent tyre shop (not quick fix whatever you do) and see what they can do for you.

Please do not waste your money on Chinese ditchfinders, its not worth the saving of £5 a corner for rubbish.
  • more wisdom from gilbert here, camskill does have good prices,i bought federals for my focus good grip and wear rate for £45 a corner fitted at a local place.
the local place matched camskill prices so i didnt need to bother ordering the tyres from them.
    ...work permit granted!
  • Can get part worn (5/6mm) premium branded ones for about 30 quid.
  • Retread, second hand or otherwise cheaper quality tyres are almost never worth the value. They are cheap for a difference.

Just use the Internet to find the cheapest source for quality tyres, you can still save a good bit.

I've heard good things about Federals from several people now, which particular tyre did you get so i can mentally note please Goldspanners.

My local indy place will almost match Camskills too, luckily for me.

The chain store type tyre depots seem to have their hands tied, but i understand Costco to be unbeatable for Michelins if you have access to a card.

    Wha car is it?
I need 195/65/15 on mine, and they are about £10 cheaper than your size.
Ebay are occasionally ok for used tyres, but you need to know what you're looking for.
I have been quoted from £10 to £15 to fit tyres that I already had, so unless you find a good fitted price internet tyres aren't always the cheapest.
I have a costco card, and have been quoted £60 a piece for mine, but I will need 4, so I'm waiting for a 20% off offer from them, last one was October, so another one s due soon hopefully.
Same Michelin energy saver is £70 at blackcircles.
