I'd have retreads and remoulds on a wagon. I'd have remoulds on a car but only from Colway whose remould tyres are widely used in motorsport.

FYI, the tyres on jumbo jets are quite often remoulds so it doesn't mean they're necessarily a bad thing.

...but also doesn't guarantee they are done to the same standard as motorsport or jumbo jets!

I'd also never use remoulds/retreads or even part worns, it's just not worth the risk to you or any other road user/person you may hit because of a failure of the tyre to do it's job.

  • I can vouch for Federal tyres too

I purchased 4 for my vectra earlier this year, exellent tyre and well recommended by every tyre fitter I called for a quote

I think it was the federal 595, £30 a side fitted and balanced at my local tyre fitter

saved me all the hassle of ordering online too

SS595 is the only good version, 535s wear too easily and none others are grippy enough...

But they are required to be the to the same standard as any other road going vehicle tyre.

But with remoulds/retreads they dont do anything with the side wall, so who's to say that the side wall hasnt been impacted in a crash, the tyre 'repaired' but with a weakened side wall and then lets go when you're doing 70 on the motorway???

    To OP,

If you can find remoulds for a good price, by all means buy them and use them with confidence. I used them for many years, I still try to obtain quotes for them when I need new tyres. But due to the fact
I no longer have such a high mileage/tyre useage,
I can't find anyone who sells them locally - I would have to travel a long way to get them thus losing any cost benefit.

I have for the last few years found the cheapest (locally) to be East European tyres.

They wouldn't be remoulded if there had been a sidewall damage.

But not all sidewall damage is obvious. It could just have weakened the internal wire/cord but look ok.

Perhaps they use special imaging tools in the factory. In any case they have to pass random sample performance tests. I never had any problems and I think worrying about the slightest risk is a waste of time. We'd never leave our houses or perhaps we'd sit in the middle of an empty field inside a steel box, if we always took risk avoidance to such extremes.
