I don't think your meter is faulty - I think the house is just hard to heat. Cheapest options have got to be carpeting and curtains that are closed late afternoon - try freecycle for these. Some people tape bubble wrap to their windows in the winter (not all of them - you need some ventilation) and this may be free from supermarket fruit and veg counters.

Back in the 60s, people in your situation heated rooms rather than houses and this may be a better option for you - turn radiators off and close doors and live in one room. Maybe heat kids' bedrooms for an hour at bedtime and then turn down.

I know it's not ideal but it might need some creative thinking to get through these cold days while you look into longer term measures.

Edit: Greedy people trying to make profits? That's what business is about. You have 7 kids, including a 2 week old youngun and you're both on benefits without either of you working...I'll say no more.

im of work due to my heart disease i would go back to work tomorrow if i could but due to having a defib fitted i cant . do you think i like being this way i was never out of work untill ill health took over , the only reason we have 7 children is one my wife came from a large family of 12 sisters and other is the pill never worked and we dont beleave in abortions so is it so wrong to have a large family someone to take the name on when im gone life is to short to sit back and do nothing . oh and just for the record both me and my wife when we can help out at the local rspca centre for sick animals
    end off

    No need to shout!

I agree. Shouting is much more impolite than swearing.

And, OP, as others have said, heat one room. Problem solved.
  • Do you have the option of changing to a monthly DD instead of pre pay?
Surely this would be cheaper for you!
I know it can't be solved overnight, but for now whilst it's very cold, I would take the advice of others, and try to heat 'essential' rooms only for now.
It shouldn't be too difficult to stay in the same room as your children, given that they're all close in ages.
  • I'm not being sarcastic or anything, but we've got Scottish weather so lets take a leaf out of their book:
Wear a genuine thick 100% wool jumper and socks.
Eat a big bowl of porridge for breakfast. You'll be amazed by how much warmer you'll be!

hi thanks for advice i love porridge lol

ill try everything thats been said and have noticed that the front door even though we have a pourch with doors there is a strong cold brezze coming from around door so i went and got the sticky foam stuff but once fitted i couldnt shut the door so what ive got in mind is to grease the door not the frame and try siliocon round frame then close door onto the silicon if all goes well it should just stick to frame and not door and make a very tight seal what do we think of that idea ?

    HAPPY NEW YEAR

Heavy lined door curtains for front door! Bit of a faff when you have lots of visitors but good substitute for double glazing.
