wireless problems!

Options
Hi to all,

I have a d-link wireless router, a pc downstairs which is the furthest from the router, a pc in my sons room and a laptop. Individually they all connect to the internet and work fine but if you try and connect more than 1 only the pc nearest to the router will work.

I have noticed that if the laptop is in second place to my sons pc and you click on the internet icon at the bottom right of the screen it says connected but you still get 'internet explorer unable to display page' I have run the diagnostic but it seems as bewildered as me as to what the problem is!

Once whichever pc is in 'first' place disconnects whoever is in 'second' place can connect without any problem.

Any ideas, please!!

thanks
jan

Which d-link router? Obviously something is not set up correctly in the router but without knowing the exact model, it's hard to say much more.

Have you tried turning the router off and on again?

Could be that the PCs have all be given the same IP (network) address so the router can't tell them apart. Check your DHCP server settings on the router and that each PC/laptop has the network configured to obtain IP address automatically.

Failing that maybe the DLink has some setting for Quality of Service or Management control whcih has been set to only allow one active connection?
  • Hi
It says Dl-524 Wireless G Router on the box, hope that helps!
    thanks

    just noticed, also says DWL-922

also says 'share your internet connection with built in 4 port switch' not sure if that has aything to do with it?

Log into your d-link DL-524 (http://192.168.0.1) while using an Ethernet cable and go to the Home > WAN page. Which of the options do you have checked? Dynamic IP address, Static IP address, PPPoE or Others?

  • Hi,
I have tried to do as advised using the laptop as it doesn't involve moving a pc from one end of the house to the other!

however I can't get access to the dlink site, possibly because I never actually installed the dlink software on the laptop, I just turned it on and away I went!

I will try and move the pc into the lounge and see if I can do it using that one although have wondered if I rang the dlink help line would they be able to tell me what the settings are and change them if needed?

sorry, I'm okay with the basics but not that good with computers!

    :T HAPPY NEW YEAR!!:T

It's not the d-link site, it's your own d-link router and no software needs to be installed on any PC as you are simply entering the IP address of your router into your browser to access it's set-up screens.

D-link would not be able to help you if you can't even log into your own router!

  • when I clicked on the blue link in your reply (espresso) it asked me to enter a user name and password. I dont ever remember setting up this, although it was a long time ago! checked the manual that came with the router and it has a default user id but not a password so still couldn't access the site.

thanks for your patience in this, much appreciated!!
