I am utterly depressed in regards to gym membership. I went for a look around the big David Lloyd near my new house, got given the grand tour and absolutely fell in love. Heated outdoor pool with sunloungers and a BBQ (very healthy! Haha!), loads of amazing dance classes, great equipment, lovely staff... £76.50 a month. Sob!

Im looking for a gym in Manchester, but I want it to have free parking so am trying to narrow down my options.

Whats the best way to haggle the price down?
  • Ok so I went to Esporta, Virgin and JJB. Esporta is my top choice but its quite expensive at £62 per month although the corporate rate is £56 (still too much really)

I really want to join but dont want to sign up for 12 months. Does anyone think its worthwhile asking them to give me the same deal but for 6 months.

Does anyone have any haggling tips?

I just discovered this and thought I'd post it here.

The Gym Group and includes Guildford - £14.99 per month, Hounslow - £14.99 per month, Liverpool - £9.99 per month & Vauxhall - £14.99 per month.

The Liverpool gym opens Autumn 2009 & the Vauxhall gym opens 10th August 2009. Both Liverpool & Vauxhall have no enrolment fee though Guildford & Hounslow have a enrolment fee of £20.

I think the no enrolment fee for both Liverpool & Vauxhall might be an introductory offer. So I guess the sooner you join up the more you'll save.

thats a good price especially for vauxhall - the question is will they limit membeship becuase they are bound to be inundated at that price

theres no mention that they have any free weights - seems to be all machines and there s no squat rack ?
  • Hi Matmatmat - I was suckered into joining a 3 month membership, paid upfront, but as I didn't cancel my membership after 3 months by giving them 1 month's notice in writing, they are asking a full month's fee. This was not explained to me at all when I joined, then was in a mad rush on the day I signed up and didn't read the minute small print...Buyer beware!!

    Funny I thought a 3 month's membership would be a 3 month membership.....

    Very disappointing.....

Need to be careful and always read T&Cs....

In Bristol there is a gym called 'fitness4less', which charges £14.99 peak and £99 for the year off peak. The joining fee is £16. There is no swimming pool but all the machinery works and is up to date which is more than I can say about othr gyms in the area!

I dont know how you lot are getting so many cheap deals. I asked my two local gyms and the esporta is £78 per month with 12 month contract. My local Virgin Active Gym is £64 per month on a short contract or £49 per month for a 12 month contract with a £30 joining fee. I have said this is more than i want to pay and the response is only "ok goodbye then"
And its the end of the month so no haggling there then.
  • I did start a new thread asking about Gyms but I have just found this one now so feeling like a bit of a numpty lol!

I am thinking of joining my local Total Fitness gym basically because it is just across the road from the college I will be attending in September (not that I am really proud to be going back to school finally):j.

However I was wondering if anyone has had any experiance of Total Fitness and if they were able to do any haggling with them.

P.S It is the Warrington branch lol!
    :DIf I am laughing, then I don't understand!! :D

  • Just a quick note to say I'm a member of a FitSpace and pay £17 a month (on a rolling monthly basis) and can't fault it for a basic gym with the stuff you need but none of the fancy extra stuff that ups the price of other gyms. There are a few around the country and Im sure they will have their own individual features but for a good, clean basic gym (with more than adequate weights area) at a cheap price I would definitely recommend it.

You can get it for £10 a month if you sign up to an 18m contract so even more of a bargain!

Looks like Guildford has just installed a squat rack and free weights:

So the others might follow suit if they haven't got them already.

Am so tempted to join, but it's a 10 minute drive for me and not sure I'd be motivated enough to go that far out of my way. The 3 gyms near my work want £50, 48 and £55 :(
