Hey, is anyone using this? I cant find any way to actually review anything. There's no option to 'review', no submit button, nothing. Can anyone who uses it tell me where to find it? Othere pepople on there seem to be talking about glitches, I wonder if this is one?

i can't even get on it
  • As of this writing our system currently holds almost 260,000 review ratings. The system also holds 20,000 reviews. Some quick math will tell you that each review has an average of 13 ratings. Certainly that should tell you that something isn’t working right!
At this time it is my unfortunate duty to inform you all that we have had to cancel the Review Ratings bounty payment. It is obvious to us that a large number of users are abusing the system and rating reviews without ever even reading the review itself. This leaves us with a dilemma. Do we comb through every review rating to determine which ones are valid and which are not? Or do we just delete the whole mess and start over?
Unfortunately for those of you who were rating member reviews in good faith the abusers have overwhelmed our system’s capability of handling the spam. As a result we will not be making any payments for review ratings alone. In fact, we have deleted all review ratings from our system. Many of you will notice the negative effect that this has had on your earnings at ComparedBy.Us but let me assure you that you will still be paid for the reviews and the referrals that you have submitted. Assuming of course that you are not one of the spammers.
This was a difficult decision for us to make. However, it is one we felt that we had to make in order to ensure that ComparedBy.Us and its legitimate members can survive. We are struggling mightily to cope with the huge influx of spam, plagiarism and cheaters who see ComparedBy.Us as a way to make some quick, easy money. Obviously, we cannot afford to pay out good money for the huge amount of spam that has been entered into our system. If we did, we wouldn’t be around for very long. We wholeheartedly intend to make ComparedBy.Us a successful community that rewards its contributing members on a regular basis. To do that we have to guard against those users who attempt to game the system.
I want to assure everyone that we WILL pay out the review payments for extended, quick and first reviews by January 20th. If you have submitted well written, unique and helpful reviews you WILL be paid.
As of now all review ratings have been removed from our system and review ratings are no longer eligible for bonus payments. The review rating module is still available for use and we are working on a plan to integrate it back into the Member Incentive Plan in a meaningful way. Watch this spot for an upcoming blog post that will ask you guys how you think you should be rewarded for rating other members reviews.

    site is now again.

Had another email conversation with the editor who reassures me all is fine and they've just had teething problems, but anyone writing well written English reviews that are original will be paid as stated. I sent the editor a link to this thread to show him people's thoughts too!

Really? Including the three window review writing formula?
I think you need to get into a rhythm. I have one web-page open on wikipedia where I check facts about a film, then one page on MS Word where I type it for spellchecker, then cut and paste over.

My advice is find a niche on something you know e.g. foreign films. I did about 20 UFC events as I know them really well.

I'm on £200 now, in about 18 hours of writing, which is around three times as profitable as I find on Dooyoo and a hundred more times than ciao!
  • Matty, I am trying to read into your post whether you are being sarcastic or not! I can't make my mind up but I do feel my thee window formula is the best way to mix informed opinion with the facts and statistics it's so eay to forget :)

Do you reckon the editor will be pleased when he sees that MSE members are plotting to bleed his site dry with content stolen from Wikipedia? Would Dooyoo or Ciao be happy to know this too?

    BTW: Hi, Mr. Editor! *waves*

He didn't say content stolen from wikipedia, he said he checked the facts there! Which is pretty commendable if you ask me.

Thanks Sarah you are right - I check my facts on wikipedia - funny how some people are just desperate to read something negatively!

Why Wiki? Surely imdb would be a more reliable source of film information?

The other problem I find with Wiki is that it can be too easy to inadvertently copy or paraphrase from it. Because the style of Wiki is often similar to that of a review writer (i.e. me, for example), it can be difficult to use information found there without subconciously simply paraphrasing it. Also, you can't guarantee the accuracy.

I don't know the site this thread talks about. However, at least on Dooyoo, I think the site looks more for opinion rather than just pure fact. A full list of cast and crew is not required (though pointing out who was good or noteworthy or otherwise is good), whilst feelings, thoughts and impressions is.

I use Word too, as it's much easier to proofread in Word than it is straight on the site (also, if your internet crashes, if you've done it in Word you don't lose everything), however, I do find that it is better if you go through and remove Word's funky formatting (en dashes, curly quotes and the like), as Word's formatting is very html unfriendly.

But anyway, my worry is the formula. I've not found an absolute formula for writing reviews - and I certainly could not manage the output some folk are talking about. I have real reservations about how helpful a 150 word review on a film (especially a foreign film) can be, especially if at least some of those words are used to impart facts from Wiki.

I'm sorry if I sounded sarcastic - that was unfair. But I do find the 'formula' a little restrictive, at least when writing longer, personal-based-opinion reviews.

    Cheers
