Need to buy a car!!

Morning everyone

After several years driving £300 old bangers, our last one has had an identity crisis and decided its a Barbeque

Hence today we are shopping for a new (used) car.

We have been saving so have a good deposit to put down, and will be using a dealership local to us if we can!!

Any tips on what extras to ask for? Considering the last time we bought from a dealership was 11 years ago!!

Our back up plan is one we have seen advertised in our local paper ;):D

we we have just brougt a skoda octavia the spec on it is so high at really good prices and if u read the reviews about them not one bad one
i got dog gard thrown in ,deisel, mats
and i was also quite pushy wth them regarding price
also if u buy from a dealership u have always got the warrenty if aything goes wrong , after a certain price i would only buy from dealerships/garages for this reason

At this time of the year and in the current climate haggle!! Dealers will be desperate for your business and prepared to negotiate.
Avoid trading in if you can as the price they inevitably offer you will increase the overall profit they get out of you, and that deduction could be one they are prepared to drop without your currnet car!
Get a guide price from a number of different sources (free) and fix a price your prepared to pay. Be careful of expensive add-on's (warrentys etc)
Your bargaining power also depends on how much you have to spend and whether your paying outright etc.
  • Just an idea....

I have been trawling autotrader and have seen good Chrysler Neons for about £1300. 2001 auto loaded nice colours. very cheap and cheerfull driving.

...and there's a very good reason for that  Neons are shocking cars, especially the autos!

OP ~ What car are you looking to buy?

Check out Drive The Deal and Broadspeed for prices of new cars before going to your local dealer.

We are looking for something that will take 3 child seats in the back - a 7 yo, a 4 yo and one on the way limits choice somewhat!

Dh has been looking through the dealers website and has seen a Renault Scenic... I think he may have his eye on that!

Have you considered leasing a new car? We currently pay just over £200 a month for a brand new Vauxhall Zafira, and after three years we just give it back! No depreciation, no worries about MOTs and tyres etc.etc Just get in and drive

Certainly something to consider - thanks for your suggestion. Dh's Dad leases his car so a call may be in order...

That is £7,200 for 3 years! No depreciation you say?

You could buy a car for that easily.
