Selling an older car...
Options
We need to sell our car as we are getting a new one through mobility on New Years Eve.
Its a 98 Renault Scenic in good nick with only 46000 miles on it.
We can't trade it in against the new car so have to sell it privately and where we live there is no space to keep 2 cars.
Are these people who advertise in the local papers any good ??
We haven't got time to trek around dealers really and need to get rid of it reasonably quickly.

Autotrader, local Friday-ad or equivelant. On the advice of others here who've tried agents i'd not recommend using anyone else to sell your car for you. It's more hassle to do it yourself, but you'll get more money and a better result in the long run.:A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things. Please don't be offended if that opinion differs from yours, but feel free to click the 'Thanks' button if it's at all helpful!0

Ebay can work for many people, you can take loads of pictures, and lots of room to do a write up.
Do tell the absolute truth about the car, warts and all, and do be prepared to fend banal questions from numbskulls.
Unless you put a phone number in, you won't be pestered by canvassers for dodgy selling sites promising all sorts, thats got to be a bonus.
Otherwise Autotrader, and do put quite clearly NO canvassers in your ad, they'll still call but it then means you can be as rude as you like to them.0 -
yes ebay, put it on with lots of pictures etc
also i dont consider an r reg car to be old!0 -
I sold a car on Ebay about 4 years ago. It was an N reg Citreon Xantia TD estate with 165000 miles on the clock. We took lots of pictures and presented an honest picture of the car. We showed and declared all marks and faults. We didn't put our phone number in the ad, though people were welcome to PM us prior to auction end.
We put in the ad that people should inspect prior to bidding etc. Not one person came to view and we had 10+ bidders. I even had an email from a losing bidder saying if the winning bidder didn't collect he would buy it at the highest price.
Easiest car selling we have ever done. Not one person coming and kicking tyres, pulling it to bids. The buyer came 200 miles to collect it with cash and drove off extremely happy.
Cost us about £15 to sell~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)

Same here, we sold our Audi A8 on Ebay, winning bidder came with cash and drove it away very happy! Takes a bit of effort but well worth it. Just wish we'd done that before shelling out a fortune for autotrader!0

Gumtree could also be an option to consider. As above ebay is probably your best bet, priced the car reasonabley and you could have a quick sale. If someone if after a car like yours then the price must be good for them to buy.0

Do you know I never even thought of Ebay
It's worth a try if I stick it on now,we're away soon for another operation for DS and parents (who are staying over with the other 2) don't drive or know anything about cars so would need to get it sorted before we go but it's definately doable
To be honest we aren't looking for a lot for it,although we can't afford to give it away.It would just be good to get a bit towards the downpayment on the new one.
Apart from one little blip with the gearbox last year it's cost us hardly anything in repairs in the 10 years we've had it.Just had a new exhaust and 4 new tyres 2 months ago before we got DS2's award as we thought it would be wise to keep up the maintenance :rolleyes:0 -
Go for ebay, sold 3 cars now, easy once the listing is up. Be brave set a 99p start price and let it fly no reserve. It will find its value. No haggleing to deal with. take cash and don't post it to Nigera!0
