Hi - if you download books from any other source - in any format - use the Calibre programme to convert them to a mobi or whatever the current kindle uses - freely available if you do a google search. Then connect your Kindle to your computer and transfer across. I have the original kindle and this is what I do - maybe someone with a more recent Kindle can say if this works with them too.

It does, alternately you can usually email the book to your kindle: any wifi/3g enabled kindle has an email address you can find through the Amazon store. You can use this to send PDFs or various other formats direct to the kindle :)

Thanks for that info.....had mine for that4 years and had completely forgotten that! Bonus then is that Calibre will let you share books by email....so once again it's a useful tool for changing format and then emailing ...will have to give it a go.

I heard that authors get less than a pound royalties per book. Or if
    http://www.societyofauthors.org/soa-news/societys-latest-recommendations-e-books
...Is to be believed, 15%-25% of sale value.
    Plus you pay 20% VAT.

I have an ereader but will only start using it seriously once the above inefficient/unfair situation improves.

Meanwhile I borrow real books from my Library - get some value from the council tax, great up to date titles too. Can even rent DVDs from the library much cheaper than renting online movies and get subtitles.
  • This may be common knowledge to some but i've only just discovered yesterday that you can borrow Ebooks from the library.

They stay on your device for 14 days and then automatically come off, & if nobody has reserved it then you can take it out again for another 14 days. Brilliant scheme!

All you need to do is sign up to a local library & download Bluefire reading app onto your phone/kindle etc..

Anybody use kindle lenders library or prime membership to do it with?

I've borrowed several ebooks from the local library, reading on my Ipad Mini kindle app, using Overdrive.

You can keep the books for up to three weeks.

It's a useful service but there are a considerable number of ebooks which aren't available. But it's a great free resource.

    Some information here

  • Found an interesting new "online only" bookstore called MineEye that seems to be trying to break the Amazon stranglehold - offering a combination of free, cut-price and full-price kindle and e-reader format books. What's different is that it is trying to appeal to both new indie authors and people looking for new writers - bringing them together as it were.
