If the bearings have gone, jack the rear of the car up, grab one of the wheels, and try and wobble it from side to side, and from top to bottom, and if there is excessive movement, then that's a sign that all is not well, but if there is no movement, then start to look at other things.

and if there is movement then get someone to apply the brakes, if the movement disappears then it is bearings, if it doesn’t then it’s a bush or ball joint

But be careful where you jack it up as one MOT tester for us jacks the rear up in a place that ,eams AL Vectr'a fail on rear arms. Yet another tester jacks them up in a place which passes the MOT.

Slightly off topic, but there y'go...

Hi all, looking for a bit of friendly money saving advice!

The rear bearings on my 53 Vectra 2.2 Elite are in desperate need of replacement. The front ones were done a few months back at a cost of £500 at my local kwik-fit (they had coroded). Now I need the back ones doing and i'm very nervous about how much i'm going to get quoted!

Could anyone advise a target price or where I should go? My logic is saying that the back ones will cost the same?!

Any help would be much appreciated!

    Thanks!

 That’s about £200 per hours labour, Formula 1 mechanics would of charged less.
ICME (the bible)book time is 1.7 Hours to fit the pair, parts should be about £90 each as they have in-built sensors and Kwik-fit will not use genuine parts. Genuine parts are about £120 each.
This is what really annoys me about these 'reputable' places. There are a lot of genuine garages out there who do a good job for a fair price but the whole motor trade is brought in to disrepute by these places.
  • Just a quick diagnostic test you could try. Find a nice quiet, wide road and drive at the speed when the noise is worst.

Steer (swerve) quickly to the right, if the noise gets less its the right hand bearing.

Steer to the left - if the noise gets less its the left hand bearing.

Just be careful and make sure you do this when no-one else is around, you wouldn't want to cause a crash!

At the milage your car has done I suspect only 1 bearing has gone.

Also, although play in the wheel bearing is a good sign of wear it is possible to a bearing to begin to fail with no play present - still wothr jacking the car up and having a look though.
  • what happens is a bearing fails
Live each day as if its your last
  • what happens is a bearing fails

It depends on the mode of failure but generally the bearing will go noisey and it will start to heat up. There may or may not be play in the bearing but eventually it will fail completely and seize up or disintegrate.

Single unit on EBay appears to be £80, probably double that from Vauxhall. Job shouldn't be too difficult 30 minutes per side labour so call it around £120 per side?
