Rear bearings - a bit nervous!!

ouch, i would assume bearings would last for the life of the car (at least 200k)0

There was a recall on them to be honest.
As for the tyres being a year old - that means nothing really.
Roll your palm over the inner edge of the rear tyres to see if you can feel any un-eveness.0 -
Oh my god you paid £500 to replace a wheel bearing!
You don't want to know how much it cost total to do that to a bmw 323ci 1999, I just got this done by my trusted mechanic for £50 labour + £16.50 for the part delivered by gsf from ebay. I had to wait for more than half a day for it as the mechanic had other jobs to do - it took him approx upto 3hours to do as it was the rear one - bmw rear wheel drive.
My advise would be buy the part online if it's definitely the bearing that has gone wrong. http://www.gsfcarparts.com/ (Try ebay under the same name, I got it much cheaper on ebay)
Then ask around garages for labour only quote. I reckon about £100 labour is sufficient on this. Never paid £500!!!!
# Are you sure both rear bearings are gone? They don't go at the same time from my experience.
I guess you are aware a faulty bearing makes knocking sound when you drive.0 -
Yeah - ouch!! The noise is the same as from the front ones, which did clear up after they changed them. Think i'll just ask a local garage's opinion... and i'll bear GSF in mind too...
Thanks everyone for your input, much apprecaited0 -
they saw you coming to be honest, sorry.
£500 to replace wheel bearings is about £350 to much i would say.
i got genuine ford focus rear wheel bearing kit for £20 from ford.
i also bought a new rear brake drum with the wheel bearing already pressed and new wheel studs fitted and new abs sensor ring for £80 from ford.
at £500 i think they must have changed the whole front hub assemblies.
never use kwik fit for repairs....work permit granted!0 -

Noise is the same doesn't mean both bearings are gone, perhaps just one. Your doing the right thing by getting a garage to look into the problem, get several garages for quotes.
I can't help but wonder whether kwik fixs took you for a bigger ride than initially thought, perhaps only one bearing needed to replace and got you to change both. A bearing that looks corroded doesn't necessarily mean it's faulty.0 -
500 big ones ?????? would have been kwik fight if that was me0

Hi all, looking for a bit of friendly money saving advice!
The rear bearings on my 53 Vectra 2.2 Elite are in desperate need of replacement. The front ones were done a few months back at a cost of £500 at my local kwik-fit (they had coroded). Now I need the back ones doing and i'm very nervous about how much i'm going to get quoted!
Kwik-Fit ripped you off. At the very worst, it should've been half of that. Rears shouldn't be more than £70-£80 a side depending where you go and where you live.0 -
If the bearings have gone, jack the rear of the car up,grab one of the wheels, and try and wobble it from side to side, and from top to bottom, and if there is excessive movement, then that's a sign that all is not well, but if there is no movement, then start to look at other things. That's my mutt in the picture above.0

Not all wheelbearings produce wobbly wheels when they go.0
