I've had two three-storey houses, one had windows that locked on the top floor, one didn't. The one that didn't had the master bedroom built into the eaves rather than having a small loft above, it's either something to do with that or it's simply building regulations changing with regard to three storey houses which they seem to do all the time - I'm sure they changed again last year.

All mine have locks fitted though! If thats the case shouldnt they fit the house with a window without a lock? do you know where i can get the regs on this?

Call your local council and ask to speak to building control. A building control officer might be able to help you.

  • ours was a new build 3 storey in 2001
EVERY window has a key lock and key with it [ if even one does not have a lock and you say they all have, you will invalidate any insurance cover]
2 of our doors would have let a rat under, never mind a mouse! keep on to the site mangaer to change them.......as its a 3 storey, they need to be fire doors and it defeats the object if they do not fit properly. remember also, as they are fire doors, you should not wedge them open or take the chain out as this too will invalidate any insurance cliam.
  • I`ve been looking and can`t find anything. I thought it was odd that the upstairs rooms didn`t have locks on. If yours have locks but they don`t work then that does sound strange. Unless they fitted them and then realised they shouldn`t have. Very strange! Got to say the fire doors are annoying as my daughters don`t think to hold them so they close quietly. I wouldn`t alter them though as I`m the one on the top floor.

Building Regs have changed again and I am sure that self-closing doors with the chains aren't required any more.

My insurance company does not insist on all windows having window locks just the ones that you can access without a ladder.

Would have been much better! My house was built by Barratts but they were great about sorting out the problems I found after I bought it when it was a year old. I also found out the other day that the central heating pipes are microbore which can be a nuisance if they get blocked.
  • My house was built by Bloor homes. At the moment they have been quick to responde to the faults (majour) i have told them about so far. But i put the snagging list in today and he didnt seem happy! it was funny though that he seem to defend the two points i have noted in here allot and didnt the others! What are the microbore pipes? the plastic ones?
