one other question- if i use a website hosting service like www.one.com and transfer my domain name do they then own it- for example if i want to go with another hosting service after a while will i own the domain name or them?

can anyone just tell me simply how to do this- from what i can see i need to
    1. buy my domain name
    2. develop my site with DW or FP or any other free software
    3. sign up to a hosting service (who also give me mailboxes) and transfer domain name to them?
    4. upload to the hosting provider my pages from step 2 using some ftp software

is that all i need to do to have my pages live
  • if you use bluevoda, you need to have a hosting account with them $7.95/month in order to publish to the web.
when you register a domain is is yours, no matter where you host the site

Hi, personally I like to keep my hosting and domain name together with the same company. This makes the setup a lot easier as they will do it all for you, although you can usually transfer your domain name to a new host if you ask those that are providing it to you. If money is really tight you may want to get the hosting and name separate.

You could use NVU to create your site if you're looking for a free WYSIWYG editor (google it). Although if you will be working a lot with the site i'd strongly advise you learn to code HTML from scratch eventually. Its not as difficult as it may first look.

Most Hosts will provide free mailboxes with your hosting plan, it depends how much you're willing to pay for it as to what you can expect in terms of how many you get etc. Once you have some mailboxes you can usually sign in to them through webmail or with a client on your computer e.g. outlook express.

For ftp you can go with FileZilla which is free and will allow you to upload your content for your site once your host is set up.

So in short yes that is all you need to get your site going
  • I would say buy your domain from somewhere like https://www.godaddy.co.uk or namecheap and then get a free hosting account from above mentioned sites or from https://www.daku.co.uk

Most of the hosts will give you one year free and then charge you after one year.

You can make a website in FrontPage which is quite easy to use or Namo webeditor is another one which is quite good as well.

Anything related to setting up your account, I'd be more than happy to help.
  • whats the best for having a photo gallery style website but with its own address, not like https://www.wix.com/darthmartyspics?

FP is dead easy to use and produces visually (and operationally technically) impressive web sites although purists will balk at the code generated (note comments above this post) as they prefer neat PHP or HMTML code and nothing else will do.

Trying to edit my PHP code is cryworthy, I've had to start making //notes :D
  • I use ehosting.com for my web hosting, and have found their tech support very good (response to an email within 10-15 minutes at 1 or 2am with a resolution to the issue - most other places I've dealt with have taken days!)
I pay them around £8 per month for hosting 4 websites for me.

An organisation I work with use 1 & 1 for their hosting, and I personally haven't had any problems with them, other than them disabling the website the day after the payment was due (due to the credit card used by them expiring and us forgetting to update it on their website).

A company which I've seen recommended but not used yet is https://www.squarespace.com - they have their own online editor, so you can design your site using that (and drag content about) I also think it's free, which is good!

Hopefully you can have a look through the various companies and find one which suits you best.
If you're wanting to put high bandwidth stuff like videos or music on the site, or anticipate lots of UK/European visitors to your site, I'd recommend a host based in the UK or Europe - as that way you're not sending data halfway across the world, and so there are less places for delays or limited capacity to affect your site.

    Hi

I use https://www.fuzioned.co.uk - probably not the cheapest around, but I experience an almost personal service from this host. The packages are comprehensive, even with the bronze package.

CSS, can render terribly if not done right. So, a tip. Download IE, Firefox, Opera, Netscape browsers and view your work in all browsers and ensure your pages look the same in each. People are always moving away from IE and Firefox and Opera are popular alternatives. So ensure your pages look good in all browsers. Browser version can display your pages differently, but I would advise just using latest versions of each.

What sort of site are you creating? is it in support of a business? if so, consider getting some professional work done on it
