Help needed please installing a plexus wireless ADSL2+Gateway

Hi we are with talk talk until now just had a desktop and modem.

Bought my daughter a laptop for Xmas and wireless router, we are tearing our hair out as we have not been able to get the wireless router connected, and have been off line since Xmas day until today, my husband as plugged the modem back in for us to get online.

The router we have, came with no written instuctions, just a set up wizard cd, we have tried for hours to follow these instuctions and got no where, tried phoning the ebuyer tecnical helpline on Friday and despite being on hold for over a hour and a half never got to speak to anyone, that phone call has cost me £10.
Phoned Talk talk tecnical help and they did give us some settings to use, and told us to phone the manufacturer of the router.

Could anyone please give us a step by step guide, on how to set up router, as i am afraid both of us are not tecnically minded, and I would love to set this up, as it has been really disapointing for my Daughter.

Thanks

By coincidence I've just spent the last four hours or so setting up a Plexus ADSL2+ router (what you've got but without the wireless bit) and it was hard work, mainly due to the Chinglish user manual.

Probably the best approach is to connect a laptop/PC to it via a wired connection and use a browser to configure the external connection to your ISP, then when the wired side is working, move on to configure the wireless side.

So, first step is to connect a PC to one of the Ethernet ports on the back, open a browser and go to the IP address that's probably shown on a sticker underneath (mine was http://192.168.1.1), put in the username and password (probably admin and admin) and you're away.

You'll need some router config info from the TalkTalk website to complete the "Quick Configuration" menu. I needed my DSL username and password, plus the VPI and VCI number to use, the type of encapsulation (probably PPPoA) and the PPP properties (probably VC mux).

As I've learned, there's a good reason why these routers are so cheap: they are a pain to set up!

  • Thanks for replies, When you say type IP address into browser do you mean the address bar?
The IP address username and password are on the base of the unit. but we have not seen anywhere to put quick configuration settings, as we have changed a couple of the settings, which we where given by talk talk, but can't find where to change it from pppoe to pppoa.

Thanks for the link, but it is not working for me, do i just go to the website mentioned and look for our model no?

    Thanks

For some strange reason the forum is filtering the link.

    Link with spaces inserted.

  • Thank you for that, have had a look at the manual, hopefully we will now have a better chance to get this working, only problem is, at the moment we have no printer, we took our three in one printer back to pc world 4 weeks ago, as it was not printing, we had only had it about 10 weeks, they said it had to be sent back to manufacturers, and if it is not back in 4 weeks, then we can ask for a replacement, actually it is 28 days today, so hopefully when husband comes home we could go down to pc world and hopefully they will give us a new printer. As i won't be able to access the manual while offline.

Once the PDF file has downloaded, save it to your PC. You can then view it as much as you like.

Agreed, I never print manuals as it's easier to search and find what you require when displayed on the PC.

  • Is it this router? http://www.ebuyer.com/special/1287?hp_prod=6 If so it is not very easy to get it running on Talk Talk. You have to alter the MTU setting of every device connected to 1400 (I think) Sorry to be vague but I spent a lot of time over Christmas at someone elses house trying to get one running on Talk Talk and gave up when the Wii couldn't be altered.

To be honest, now is probably a good time to contact Ebuyer and say it's not compatible with a Wii (Ok you don't have a Wii, but they don't know that) and that you would like to exchange it for a different make/model.

It will cost a few quid more to get a better known make, but you'll also probably gain a few hours during which you could be doing something more interesting and less stressful...
  • Thank you all for your advice, yes it is the router you linked to but it has come down in price.

I have just had a phone call from Ebuyer, the laptop came with 7 days free support, but as it was a present, I had it delivered on the 18th Dec, the 7 day trial has run out. I could extend this cover for 12 months for £39.99, but as the number given on my email was only open during office hours it was of no use to me.

The Guy who phoned me today was trying to get me to take out this cover, and i said, tecnical support that is only available office hours Monday to Friday was of no use to me, but when you purchase you get a freephone number 24/7 he has given me the cover now for 14 months at £29.99, due to the problems I have had.

So everything should be fine now.

Thank you all very much for your help.
