Abby - idiots at large

Myself and my partner open a fixed rate saving a/c at abby in october, we took with us our passports and address proofs and various other anti-money laundering proofs of identity, the abby representative who looked like he was in Y9, photocopied all our proofs and the a/c was opened.

We got last week a letter from abby, basicly assusing us of money laundering and wasnted to verify our identiry and our nationality.

When my partner complained, all she got was it happens, and that they forgot to send off our proofs. if it wasnt for the 7% interest rate, we would close the a/c down and move to a more competent bank!!!

I applied for a current account with Abbey (for the £100) twice online and once over the phone. They lost one of my online apps and the telephone one; how I don't know. I then had to demand they remove the extra credit searches which they have. Have now been told that the documents are being sent out. I'll believe that when I see them.

If you are going to be judgemental against others, then you should be wary of others being judgemental of you. Your spelling gives us the impression you are in year 9.

A bit harsh on those in year 9 to be honest!
  • Calling the bank idiots is somewhat ironic given your inability to even spell the name of the bank correctly, no? :)
    From Poland...with love.

    They are (they're)
    sitting on the floor.
    Their
books are lying on the floor.
The books are sitting just there on the floor.
  • I would also assume that if the Abbey thought you were money laundering, they would call the police rather than accuse you via letter.

There are security checks for a reason.
  • Good call Caroline73, Abbey are not allowed to 'tip you off' if they suspect you of money laundering. What wording in the letter makes you think they are accusing you of it?
Trying to only spend money when I absolutely have to.
Barclaycard: £4559-1500 = £3059 (Will have £900 to add to that end of September)
    Loan from Friend = £2000
  • Maybe i was a bit harsh, but the letter made specific references to money laundering, saying that they were restricting our access to the money and that they even printed the letter and relevant information inserts on non-corporate letter headed paper, in B&W, no colour, as if they had photocopied a letter. I thought at first it was a scam, and was about to throw it away, however it did have our a/c number on it.

The spelling mistakes are that of my Dyslexia!!! lol - i don't see them!!!!!

  • I sympathise with your experience of Abbey. When I moved into a rented house with several friends about a year ago, I opened a Abbey joint account with a close friend for the purpose of paying rent and bills. It was a bank with which neither of us had a relationship.

I have had current accounts or savings accounts with most (but not quite all) of the large banks in the UK... and none of them are anywhere near as bad as Abbey. No joke. I consider myself a very patient and understading person when things dont work out... but both of our local Abbey branches seemed to be staffed by people who did not know what they were doing. I felt uncomfortable providing them with copies of identity documents because I had a feeling they would lose them - and they did.

In fact, we were declined a joint account initially even though we both had perfectly clean credit and well paid professional jobs. We had to wait 24 hours for a decision. They could only "speed up" this decision to the then and there if we transferring our existing account. I even stupidly agreed to transfer a single direct debit and they still could not get it to go through... I also seemed to know more about banking sort codes than the Abbey person who seemed confused by my existing account number. The whole process took more than 2 hours.

Calling Abbey about this was a nightmare. The guy in branch even gave me the number code to get past the automated system (the one which required you to enter your card number to speak to someone, even though i had no card!). The internet banking service doesnt change standing orders in any timely manner (took 7 days to change our rent amount).... they also managed to spell my middle name incorrectly (Jame instead of James).... i had to open a sole account and then add my friend on as a joint account holder after repeating all the above for a second time over....branch not having right ID, branch not having the correct form to do this, so having to get it faxed from another branch after waiting an hour.... but eventually couldnt have it faxed.

    So we just gave up.

I've had BACS payments take much longer then the usual 3/4 days, internet banking break and produce the strangest of errors. Honestly, I could go on... It has since become apparent to me that trying to do anything other then pay in a cheque is not wise.

We did get joint account out of Abbey eventually.... but I bank mostly with Lloyds TSB which is a pleasure and can only laugh at Abbey's incompetence to do anything right in comparison.

Are you working for Abbey or do you look like you are in Y9?
You seem to take it personally, dunstonh.
I find posters picking on spelling of other posters a bit childlish myself....

    My sentiments exactly.

I'd love to know how a five letter name becomes four letters long.

You should be complaining about your school, OP. They've made more of a mess for (or should that be of) you than Abbey has.
