lol, my webcam is in built into my lappy but i've never used it on the web!! I use it solely for building my home made dvds ;)

Some people buy a lappy and it just happens to have an in built webca, doesn't mean they will ever use it.

Hence a webcam is nothing to do with connecting to the internet!!

    From http://www.answers.com/webcam

"A digital camera capable of downloading images to a computer for transmission over the Internet or other network."

I think if a webcam could not be conected to the web you would be forced to call it a 'cam'! Think the op's point is that if a laptop has a webcam built in it must, by defination be capable of conetcting to the web. Not to say it will ever be used.

So by that definition my Video Camera is a webcam.

Yeh, most video camaras can be used as a webcam - mine can.

Of course, a defintition can often fit more than one item, and definitions can usually be made more, and more, precise. Which is why you have technicall writers and legalise!

For the purpose of the above tho, the ability to network is an intergral part of a webcam - in fact it's an intergral part of the word 'web'cam!

you can use for many things eg building home made dvds, using it to chat to people over the internet, take pictures and email them to people, but imo i think the main use of a web cam is to use it over the internet

Im not sure if they are on commision but they are definitly told to push the extended warranties. I recently went in with a friend to currys to buy an expensive laptop and came out with about £190 worth of additional goodies as i made it clear i would take our business elsewhere. I know for sure that i would not have recieved the extra items we did ,had i not pushed for them.

It may seem off your point but you do have the option of negotiation with them also. I just went in there and made it clear that if they couldnt offer me the best deal possible i would go somewhere else that would accomadate.

In my experience most of the big retailers have a certain amount of leeway (sp?) when customers come in looking for a deal. It certainly doesnt hurt to test the waters with a counter offer.I certainly dont feel embarassed asking what more they can do for me.
  • I worked in PC World about a year ago. The salespeople don't work on commission but there are targets that, if met, means that you get a bonus. The targets are on certain systems, or on extended warranties, or finance deals, or additional extras like antivirus or office software. You'll generally find that the best way to get some advice/help, even if it's on Desks is to go to the laptop area because that's where most employees get deployed. It annoys them massively to be taken away from the sales floor so I find it quite amusing to do!

    No commission.

As it is most people go in as a sales job, I went in for a PC Job. Looking to leave for a more PC-orientated job, but PC World pays well for a 17 year old...

So they've removed the commission element per sale because customers complained about the pressure, and instead shifted the no commission statement from being front loaded scheme to a rear loaded bonus system which is still a form of commission.

I remember being in Halfords browsing but listening in on a particularly greasy satnav company rep who said to the sales team that they would get free gifts from them for each sale of their product.

Exactly viking. At the particular store I worked in, the most 'successful' salespeople were the ones who had little knowledge of technology but were good at selling. They sold only the systems that were part of the targets. There'd be a lower, middle and upper range laptop/desktop that they'd learn the specs of, and it'd be only those that they sold. If the customer was to become interested in something else then they'd often pass off the sale to a trainee to close because it didn't mean anything to their bottom line anyway.

Same as its pointless to include rescue/application CDs with a netbook but no CD drive!

Thats a stupid analogy, of course even Netbooks should have a rescue/OS CD, have you never heard of an external CD or DVD drive?

Do you think Netbooks are immune from OS problems that could need an OS re-install to rectify?

I get really annoyed by the makers (usually the cheap makers like Advent) who cant be bothered to spend the 20p on a rescue CD.
