PC World - Staff on commission??!

I visited PC World and overheard a member of staff lying through his teeth about laptops...Are they on commission?! He was desperate to get the customers to buy a more expensive product. I overheard the staff member telling the customer that laptops (prices ranging from £350-£400) would not work with the internet, they are simply for microsoft office....I couldn't believe my ears, he proceeded to go into great detail to try and convince the customers to buy a more expensive laptop...He was not impressed when I loudly pointed out to my friend that it was very strange for a laptop not to be able to connect to the internet when they come with a free WEBCAM!! I work in sales and think that honesty is the best policy, I'd rather see someone get a product that is in their price range and to their expectations than lie to them! Shame on you

what's a webcam got to do with connecting to the internet?
  • It'd be slightly pointless to have a webcam that you couldn't use on the web... Same as its pointless to include rescue/application CDs with a netbook but no CD drive!

Lying to people isn't on, but surely they could just have a look at the technical information? I would've thought it'd be on display...

Oh come on, yes it can be used for other things...but in reality webcams are used on the internet!

They aren't on commission but they are pressurised to sell big. A colleague of mine used to work for PC world but he quit because it's too stressful and he couldn't bare to keep lying to customers.

He told me that he was under pressure to sell extended warranties with a huge percentage of sales and if not, he'd be in trouble. They had to lie to customers about the likelihood of their computers going wrong so as to get those extra sales. In the end, he just couldn't do it any more so left.

It's not a nice place to work, the higher ups give the staff unreasonable targets and the only way they can keep their jobs is to push sales by any means necessary. That's why I use ebuyer.
  • To be fair the wiresless on the entry level PC world models is dreadful.

The lesson here? do your homework and go into the store armed with what you want and don't be swayed by their sales pitch, or take someone along with you who knows about these things!

It's easy to give in to that negative voice that chants "cant do it" BUT we lift each other up.
We dont count all the runners ahead of us & feel intimidated.
Instead we look back proudly at our journey, our personal struggle & determination & remember that there are those that never even attempt to reach the starting line.

At least they were getting some help albeit a load of nonsense! I wanted to willingly part with some cash and was ignored constantly and when I finally did get someone to serve me he went off to check if the laptop was in stock and never returned! After we went and found him again he said he wasn't a sales assistant and had told someone to come and tell me that.

I then was (finally) ushered into the sales room where I was plonked down and was then talked over. the salesman then upped and left to go and talk to his friend who had come in to see him. After 20 minutes of sitting there I got up, told the manager that he could keep his 'invisible' laptop that never appeared and went and made a complaint at the main desk, (as much use as that was!) and promptly left the store.

Nice new laptop from elsewhere :)

I think they are just sales people but not experts in computers. I bought a pc in the summer there and they gave me a higher spec pc than I should have got and put the price through manually as wouldnt work on the till (obviously showing higher price) and it was the manager that did this. Every time I have spoken to someone in there I seem to know more about computers than they do! Not their fault I suppose, its the manager's for given them poor staff training.

lol, my webcam is in built into my lappy but i've never used it on the web!! I use it solely for building my home made dvds ;)

Some people buy a lappy and it just happens to have an in built webca, doesn't mean they will ever use it.

Hence a webcam is nothing to do with connecting to the internet!!
