what do you think of renaults with a card instead of a key?

hi all, thinking of changeing our 7 seater zafira(03 plate) for a 7 seater renault scenic (55plate), both petrol and manual.

but OH went to look at it and was going on about a card instaed of a key, all i can think of is extra cost!

is there many known faults with scenics? and are these cards any good? Our zafira has been playing up for ages it has a common problem - it cuts out, em light comes on diagnostics say misfire, but we have spent a fair few quid on egr vales, cleaning all sorts up and everytype of spark plug going, but with the 4 kids it is becoming a bit dangerous!

any help or guidance apprechiated:beer:

FWIW we had a Scenic the first year they came out - loved it, and it never let us down - so much so that when, 12 years later we needed a new car, we've replaced it with another Renault - a Laguna estate, which has also fitted our new needs perfectly. The new car has a card, not a key - not noticed any difference. Hope I'm not hexing it by posting this!

I've owned the Megane and had the 48 hour test drive of a Laguna. Both have the card instead of a key, and both had the keyless entry.

Card worked fine to start the car, but the keyless entry failed on the Megane meaning a change of handle and worked when it liked on the Laguna which was on delivery miles when we drove it.

Had the Scenic and got the Espace both with the card. No problems.

(There is a key in the card to open the doors if needed)
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

    vauxhall to renault?

    frying pan into the fire?

just another thing to go wrong, although if there is something that can break, it will for me
Remember the time he ate my goldfish? And you lied and said I never had goldfish. Then why did I have the bowl Bart? Why did I have the bowl?
  • Avoid the Scenic petrols. they aint that nice. Go for the smoother diesel (did I really say that?)

The 1.5dCi 105bhp is lovely to drive.

Just make sure that the one you buy comes with two cars as they cost about 120quid to replace.

The hands free locking on the top spec models is nice cos you keep the key in your wallet or purse and it knows when your near the car.

Doesnt take that much to get used too. Most customers of mine find the handbrake is more involved and mind boggling lol.
  • we would opt for a diesel model but they seem to be a lot more money and we haven't got that much so was going to stick with petrol, and we checked today thanks for the tip and the car would only come with the one key - should we ask for another? or rather tell them we want another?

well the one key rule applies to any car (well anything built in the last 10 years at least)

the £120 for a new key isnt that bad

Always make sure you have more than one!
  • Ask em to supply two cards.

7 seater 05 plates ones have been selling for 5 grand. Dynamiqu model too.

I'm pretty sure the cards slot apart to reveal a key, although I never needed to work out where it went.

Stupid idea though, maybe they should concentrate more on improving dealer service than spending millions on gimmicks.
