I know this thread is old however, for a recent comparison of costs, I have just had the following done as part of a new extension:
Install new Ring Main into new Kitchen (with grid isolation for appliances)
Install 2 new Cooker Circuits into new Kitchen
Install 6 new lighting positions (including the supply of 4 x halogen downlighters & 1 Low energy fitting)
Extend existing ring main into non kitchen area of extension
Install Toilet Extractor and ducting
Install Ducting for Kitchen extractor
Supply and install 2 new outside coach lights
Supply and install 1 outside socket
Supply and install new RCD board along with associated upgrades to the Earth bonding
All to Part-P (including certificate)
£1065 + VAT including all parts and labour except for the kitchen light fittings. Which I was very pleased with.0 -
I am a self employed electrician in Bournemouth...When people make assumptions based on it only takes a couple of hours to change the consumer unit they dont tend to realise it can take the same time again to test it and fill in the electrical installation certificate0

Hello,
I’m a Sparky based in Leeds. £500 could be a reasonable price but you need to get a breakdown of what your guy is going to do. Like someone has already said the main bonding may need to be upgraded, or installed.
If you are swapping from a standard Wylex re-wirable fuse board (horrible brown things with BS3036 fuse holders) to a dual RCD consumer unit a full inspection and test will have to carried out on the property and then an Electrical Installation Certificate will be issued to cover this work. As this work falls into Part P of the building regs it will have to be notified to the local authority. Your Sparky should do all of this.
I don’t think there is such thing as a straight forward board swap. There will always be problems. Like neutral to earth faults that wont have any consequence with a fuse but and RCD will trip straight away. Crossed neutrals, very common on lighting circuits. Borrowed neutrals, again very common on a stairs lighting circuit. No, or broken earth (CPC) circuits. Circuits that were intended to be a ring final circuit but one conductor is not a ring. Suppliers earth not giving a reading, or outside of the defined limits. I don’t want to sound pessimistic but a nice new consumer unit looks like a simple job, but it can be a bucket of worms.
I did one a few weeks ago and it took me two days to find and rectify all the faults before I could change the board.0 -

I didn't realise time team was on.
What is it with people digging up old threads and feeling the need to comment without actually reading the whole thread???
Look at the date!!!Lightbulb Moment 17/09/20060 -
I am NICEIC registered electrician, i have 3 other electricians wich work for me full time, but i wouldnt charge more than £350 even if i did it myself.
All electricians have to assume a full days work when a fusebox gets changed with a consumer unit.
The testing needs to be done with an instrument wich is about £800. And then is the paperwork with all details of the circuits, tripping times of the RCDs, british standards... Then the part P notification to the NICEIC plus insurance backed warranty.
For this money we include all materials and also we take the responsability that the property is up to date and safe.
For people who try to do it the cheap way i suggest that they pay the right money.

!!!!!! whats the matter with you commenting on a thread this old apart from spamming it which you have been reported for.I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.
You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.0 -
Hmm, the company doesn't seem to be registered either, despite splashing NICEIC all over the website0
