This was the same guy who said we could talk about VAT - so I am not going with that - I think he is a charlatan. Thanks for input everyone - this is such a great board

I assume if he suggested talking VAT that there is no way he could do a full Part P certification as that would need to go through the books.
  • I quoted £250 to change a fuse board the other day. It turned out to be a complete nightmare and took the best part of a day. In hine sight a more realistic quote would have been in excess of £400 including the vat. That said I did upgrade the whole earthing system.

Just got a quote from guy to:

    • Upgrade earths £50.00

    • Replace fuse board with split load RCD type and test. £500.00 inc

What do the sparkies think of this? Seems a bit much. WE are in the south east. TIA

Hi Im in The South East and would charge £400 Max including main earthing and Split Load Board with dual RCD to 17th Edition. And also the big one an NICEIC CERTIFICATE for the works and notify Building Control through NICEIC online.(Including Testing)
  • We paid £500+ VAT a couple of months ago to have a new board fitted. Sounds like we overpaid so I won't be recommending the electrician (or using him again).
  • I'm replacing a 35 year old consumer unit tomorrow.

The job is a conservatory with 5 sockets and 2 lights. There is no gas bond or RCD protection.

I can not do the conservatory electics until the bonding is done. There will be 2 seperate circuits for the new conservatory - 1 sockets / 1 lights

The total cost to the customer for the consumer unit and the bonding is just short of £300. The conservatory company will pay for all the work in the conservatory.
    baldly going on...
  • We got ours replaced last year. Bought the consumer unit ourselves from Screwfix and had it fitted for £70
It's not easy having a good time. Even smiling makes my face ache.
  • £70! I wouldn't expect much of a job for that! Bet you never got a certificate for the work, which is LAW!

I bet we did. We just got really lucky in the fact that we know the person that did it and he only charged us for labour because we bought the unit ourselves.

  • We had ours done about 2 months ago and it cost us £300 our first quote was over £400 though, we're also in the south east.
  • Hello, I am a fully qualified electrician. I have 35 years experience in the trade. I mainly do commercial and industrial installations and so have not bothered to register as part p. I can still do domestic work but I must let building control know.
£100 for a split load board. Not bad he will get it for around £65- £75.
I charge £200 per DAY and test the work that I do.
Cheap - I hear the other sparkies cry, must be a rubbish job. You do not have to rip people off to make a living.
Beware people crying NICEIC there are good ones and bad ones.
Always get a reference or consult a local register.
I am in the Leeds area.
