High Street Store Sale Prices - What are my rights?

Options
Hi

I am looking for some advice on a dispute I am currently having with a well known high street store.

I recently purchsed two identical dresses from the stores website (in different sizes) and when I returned one to store the price that came up on the till was £25 each. (I originally paid £45 each) As I had the original paperwork I was credited the full amount however I asked the cashier how long the dress had been reduced. I was advised that the dress had been £25 for some time and before that had been £35. (I returned the dress two days after I received it)

I was advised that I should bring the other dress back for a credit and then re purchase at the lower price, however my Christmas party was the next day so I didn't have time to do that!

I sent an email to the company to query this price and received an auomated response stating that there had been some problems with discounts online and that refunds would be processed in due course. I then heard from a member of the customer service team and after a series of emails they are refusing to give me a refund of £20. They state that in order to keep up with their competitors they hold promotions in store. However as the cashier advised that the dress had been discounted for some time I think that it must have been an error with their online ordering system.

Can anybody advise if stores are able to charge higher prices online? Do I have a case to take this further? (I was going to send a formal letter of complaint to their head office) - It really isn't about the money it is just the principle!!

Thanks for any help.

You ask "what are my rights" ?

A better question might be "what about the retailer's rights" ?

He can offer to sell it at whatever price he wishes - if you agree to that price, then a contract is made.
  • you were quite happy with the price before you knew you could get it £20 cheaper - also you'd feel quite smug I guess if the price had gone up by £20. Get over it, life's too short.

I don't really understand what it is you want, or are venting over.

As far as I can see, you bought 2 identical dresses for £45 each, you took one back because it didn't fit and got a £45 refund because you had the receipt. You kept the other dress to wear to your xmas party.

Are you saying you now want a refund of £20 for the other dress you kept to make it £25? If that is the case then surely you should have only got £25 refund on the dress you took back. You can't have it both ways.

  • To answer the OP's point, Yes they can charge different prices. It's a lot easier to have individual POS changes instore than it is changing the website, so the retailer has a decision to make as to whether they extend online or not.

I would be relatively annoyed too, but unfortunately that is the way some retailers work. Writing to them, stating your dissatisfaction may be the answer, and depending on how good a customer you are of theirs, they may wish to offer you a goodwill gesture, but in terms of rights, the only one you have is to not shop there again.

Good customer service on their behalf will mean you are not out of pocket, but they have no obligation to do anything I'm afraid.

But the OP isn't out of pocket, they gave her a refund of £45 for a dress they are now selling at £25

  • OP,
apart from inside your head where is the dispute?

    You bought two dresses

You took one back and got a refund.....END OF STORY

NOW you want a refund for the difference between what you paid and what the dresses were on sale for when you returned one.

You knew the original price, what the hell makes you think you deserve more.

If the price had gone UP would you want to pay the difference?
    Nope didnt think so

move on and get a life

not all sale stuff is the same across branches. i know h&m for a fact have some stuff in sale @ £5 up oxford circus in 1 store and full price at the other stor... yet go to a local one and the item is £7 in the sale.

also there are a few online that don't sell things reduced or if they do, its not as much as in store.

I think the OP should be grateful to have been able to get an instore refund for a product bought online.
