my sons are aged 10 and 8. they do not get pocket on a weekly or monthly basis, they have chores that they have to, ie make thier bed, empty and load the dishwasher and tidy thier toys away when they have finsihed with them. if they want to earn money for toys or to put into thier bank they have to do extra chores ie polishing , hoovering, cleaning the fire out or the windows, wash the car (yes i have to redo the jobs they have done as they are not perfect lol) . i know sometimes it seems harsh to other people but my boys see both me and my husband go to work full time and still struggle for the things we want so they know if they want something they have to work hard for it and save. in saying that if they have behaved really well and not ratty weeks etc then i will treat them with a toy or a day out for being well behaved.

DD is 7 in a fortnight, and knew she would get it from then, but TBH she has been remarkable over the last few weeks. I am single and pregnant () and she does little bits and bobs that just make things so much easier: clearing table, emptying/reloading stuff she can reach in dishwasher (bless :A ) and reaching bits on the floor so I don't have to bend down etc

So I started giving her PM this week of £2.50 on a Friday. It's for magazines, new fangled sweet thingys etc. Just little treats.

We sat down and I explained that I was not paying her to do jobs, but that as a really important member of the household who played a very important part in running the house, she could now have a "share" of the income.

Chuffed was not the word :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::D

I must be really stingy then!

DD is 10 next week and doesn't get fixed pocket money every week. Myself/her nan/Dad buy her everything she needs and she gets a few pounds here and there for treats. She doesn't seem to do too bad as she always has a few pounds in her purse and if she gets money for her birthday/xmas she normally saves it :D

After reading this thread I had a chat with my 10 year old and we decided that he would get £2.50 a week, 5 yo would get £1.50 and 3 yo would get £1 - can't have one getting without the others, and the little ones like putting pennies in their banks

They can use it for extra treats - DS2 is always on at us to buy him cars, so maybe having to use his own money will curtail him a little.

I don't give my older 2 pocket money ,they get EMA and both have waitering jobs at our local chinese and earn £50+ a week , more during the hols.My 15 year old gets £10 a week from me and he has a paper round which gives him another £22 per week (morning round) he also has a baby sitting job for one of my friends who gives him £7.50 per hour.He buys all the extra stuff he wants and pays his phone each month .My younger 2 are 12 and 13. They get £7.50 per week from me with the opportunity to earn an extra £2.50 each week by doing extra chores ( hoovering stairs etc) .Out of this they have to pay for half their top ups (£5) and activities they want to do .Daughter has to buy any make up and such if she wants them although I do order bits from Avon for her and dont make her pay for them.

  • Good morning Everybody,

Looking for some advise re pocket money for 12 year old girl-

She get a phone with a £20 contract monthly ( yes very lucky but dad has a business contract with phone co and as we have learnt from friends works out alot cheaper than £10 a week pay as you go)

I have been paying her £3.50 a week in her current account which she can get to with her cash card. She is off to France for a week with school next year and so is saving for her spending money.

My question is-is this too much or not enough?

She is very good around the home, I'll iron and she will put it all away for me.

    Your guidance etc please
  • I'll be very interested in hearing responses to this too.

I have an 11 year old who I would deem to be high maintenance. I used to give him £5 per week pocket money but that would be spent the day I gave it to him. We then changed it to £1 per day and this seems to work better. In total he is getting:

£30-£31 per month (ie the £1 per day)

    £12 per week (guitar lesson)

£10 per month (mobile phone) I downright refuse to top up so when its gone its gone

    Total £89

In addition he tends to go swimming once a week or to McDonalds or something so thats always another £5 here and there.

    At least £20 in total

On top of this we pay for music lessons in school and various other activities.

I would like to say that he doesn't get any sweets or anything on top of that but he raids the cupboard. Also he is so fast growing (especially his feet) At the minute his feet seem to be growing a size per month so there is always outlay on clothes and shoes for him.

so what's the £1 per day for? Is he saving this? I expect my 15 yr old to fund his phone top up and any activities with friends out of his allowance - he gets £50 a month off me and has a paper round as well.

I think £5 a week is enough pocket money for an 11-12 yr old, £10 would be generous.

I am 30 give or take a few weeks and when i was 12 i got £5 a week plus piano lessons and I used to swim every morning before school so I guess maybe £15 a week all in. No idea what that would be in todays money. In addition to that I used to get £2.50 from my grandparents that was saved for the summer holidays

    My DS is 14 1/2.

He gets £5 a week pocket money
He gets £9 a week for jujutsui.

We pay for anything extra he does cinema, swimming, money for lunch if he goes out with his mates. He mostly spends his pocket money on dvds or saves for ps3 games.

Come November when he turns 15 he wants a contract phone, which we've agreed to pay £10 a month for it. At the minute I top up his phone when his credit runs out.

My DD who is nearly 10 1/2, gets £15 a month pocket money. We pay £6 a week for jujutsui, she doesnt really go off and do her own thing yet but if she did we would again pay for her cinema, swimming etc.

DD who is 6 gets £10 a month and £1 a week for rainbows.

I think what you are giving her sounds about right. She sounds sensible as well, saving for her spending money.
