Good to know that they honoured almost 2k worth of transactions and im now in debt, with no money and no cards.
You would have thought they would have called me or stopped them?
Why would i put myself in debt the day before xmas day when in the 15 years ive been with them, ive never hit red?!?
I'm not best pleased! :wall: and they will be getting a flea in their ear 2moro. Its now been cancelled only because i called when my legitimate transaction was declined today!
I can't for the life of me understand why you are blaming Halifax for this?! As you have stated they did eventually block transactions and yes a number of fraudulent ones went through but they then stopped the card due to their suspicians. Every day staff of banks no doubt get abuse for declined transactions from people with cards blocked by an anti fraud system so they have to get the balance right and can't possibly spot every fraudulent transaction. Watchdog even did a show highlighting the SCANDAL of banks putting fraud blocks on cards whilst customers are abroad, they can't win!
The systems the banks use won't look at whether you usually go overdrawn it will look at usual fraudster behaviour and try to spot these kind of transaction patterns.
You may have had some inconvenience but it's Halifax who will end up losing money through this fraud and so clearly do all they can to prevent fraud where they can.0 -

It's a pain in the rear for the OP and a horrible experience.
But he/she will get fully reimbursed and the poor battered shareholders will be the ultimate losers. As if we haven't already lost enough in the last 15 months!!0 -

I'd agree with that.
Always pay cash now in all petrol stations.....
In relation to credit / debit cards...I can honestly say NOBODY has touched my cards in the last year....I input it into the POS machines and guard my PIN like the crown jewels

Thats why I split accounts...
I only take my CC our when i'm going shopping, and I now have another bank account with limited capital for when I go out, so if I lose it, i'm not terribly concerned as theres only a few hundred in there at most. That and it has no OD facility on it.0 -
...a bit like cutting your nose off to spite your face?
Not really, the relationship between the OP and his/her bank cant go on as it stands,if he/she feels that strongly that Halifax cant run their account properly then it is time to move on,however if the OP does not move his/her account they are accepting that these "things" can happen.
I am currently moving from Bradford and Bingley because I know their new owners Abbey, will make a total mess of the account(from previous experience)if I did not move and when they do mess up the account in the future,it,s partly my fault as I never made the effort !I have a deep burning indifference0 -
I've just had a similar experience. I tried to use my debit card in several stores today and it wouldn't work so tried it in a cash machine and it told me to go to the branch. Apparently someone has got my details and set up an account with O2. The first payment tried to come out on Xmas Day but my bank thought it seemed suspicious and stopped my card/account. Seems it was probably internet fraud as there were no store transactions so doesn't sound like cloning (plus noone ever gets to see my PIN!!!). Whilst I must sing the praises of my bank for the fraud team spotting it and then the excellent customer service I received sorting it out today, it has left me very scared to be honest. I guess I'm relatively naive in the areas of theft and I'm not sure which cash machines to use now or how to use my card online safely! (I only ever use Amazon or Ebay though so thought it was relatively secure...just goes to show) Wish I was more tech savvy...!!!!
Hope you get things sorted out soon!!!New Debt Journey: Pay off £19,622.91 by 30th April 2015 :T

I have just returned from 2 weeks in Egypt. Last time I was on holiday I had my knuckles rapped for not informing the bank so this time I let them know before I went. They wanted to know the date I was arriving in Egypt and what date I was coming back.
Whilst on holiday I tried to withdraw money but it kept saying it was refused. I tried on several occassions at different banks but still refused. I was absolutely furious as I had to use my credit card instead to withdraw money ahich would end up costing me more than using the visa debit card that I had intended on using.
I got home and decided to check my account before I called the bank to complain. I sat in disbelief as I saw transaction after transaction for ATM withdrawals in Indonesia!!!! They took thousands as I was in credit with a £4.5K overdraft sitting on the account. They had on some days taken out money 15 times and even I can see from one days account that it was fraudulent behaviour. I mean who visits the ATM 15 times in one day whilst on holiday and withdraws amounts ranging from £6.09 to £153.96?
I called the bank but at the time I was a blubbering wreck. Now I'm angry at the bank as they knew I was in Egypt at the time so how did they authorise the transactions in Indonesia but block those in Egypt. The hassle this has caused like for others on this thread is unbeliveable. I've had to close my main account and am left with no cash or means of paying for anything other than credit cards. The bank say it should take about 6 weeks to investigate it. The banks know the countries where fradulent transactions tend to take place so why do they authorise any such transactions without prior notice that you are visiting those countries?
I am considering asking for compensation for the hassle. In my case the bank had no right to authorise transaction from anywhere other than Egypt and I lay the blame directly with them.

Happy New Year
For me the best thing the banks could do would be to put a section on each account's internet banking entitled, "card preferences" or something. It would have tick boxes saying:
- allow internet purchases on this card
- allow card not present purchases
- allow use abroad (in these countries...)
- prevent use in cash machines (useful for credit cards)
